Had my first nearly-off experience tonight.
Been down t'pub with the mother to drown the shakes.

Was going up a hill following a car doing a steady 15mph on the RS, got pissed off so backed off, hammered the throttle (to overtake) and was probably doing 40-50 when it turned right without indicating.

Front brake slammed on in panic, managed to stoppie without meaning to, then the bike turned into a bit of a bucking bronco, was amazed I didn't fly off, then sat in the middle of the road trying to calm the shaking down so I could find first and leave. Must have driven at a steady 30 the rest of the way, then coming home doing 40 felt like I was doing 120 and I was going to die.

ARGH

Sad

But didn't make any contact, managed to not fall off or do the bike any damage, so I guess I could be considered lucky.

Anticipate the worst at all times mate Thumbs Up I know gaining speed to overtake seems like a good idea but it just gives you less chance to react if the twat infront does something stupid. It happens to us all, so many fucking idiots about Evil or Very Mad Glad your ok and stay safe!

oooohhh ok.

Let you off then mate Laughing Next time drinks are on me, and good on ya mom for understanding.

Yeah I'm an old git but years of exerience teaches you to expect the unexpected and to regard the car driver in front as little more than an escaped window licker.

Might sound a bit 'odd' but its not a bad thing to actually experience this sort of incidence.

You survived and thats the main thing. Throughout your time on a bike you will experience a fair amount of the same levels stupidity or random acts of driving. The majority will, hopefully, be pretty minor, but they will enhance your abilty to react, and more importantly, observe.

Talk to someone who has ridden a bike for a long time and they will not only tell you about the numerous accidents they might of had but also a wierd kind of ability to almost mindread people and understand what the person in front; or the driver at the next junction will most likely do in the next few seconds. Even in my car I can tell my wife when a person is likely to pull out from a junction or do something else just as stupid.

Autumn / winter is a crap time for bikes, relax, slow down, and start looking around.

I had a near miss today too,

Was coming up to a roundabout a bit faster than i should have been..

It was a roundabout to join a dual carriage way, i was about to just driver straight around it.. At like 30 MPH or summit, When i saw a car zooming from the right of the roundabout to go straight over, ( my left )

So i slammed front brake on,, just went over the line doing a stoppie..

Funniest thing is while the stopie was coming back down i switched from 3rd to first, and as soon as i landed i pulled away without either feet touching the ground Confused Cool Out of shock though.. doubt i will ever do that again Very Happy

But like people said, Near misses make you think about doing the same thing again..

I know i wont approach that roundabout that fast again..

And i know i wont try to brake whilst going over a wet drain again ( came off this time Neutral )

Anyway.. nice to see a near miss thread than a i came off thread

Thumbs Up

had quite a few experiences on roundabouts. One thing I'll never forget is cagers when oncoming onto roundabouts. Was last winter and there was frost on the road. Seen the cager turn right (remember it was oncoming to me opproaching the roundabout) just as I had assumed he was going straight over the roundabout and had pinned the throttle (as you do with a speedfight 100). I slammed the on the brakes causing BOTH wheels to lock. Had to stop the scooter from falling a few times by stamping my foot down and picking it up whilst both wheels are locked on the frost. I managed to stop in time and so did he (me over the line by a bikes length though!) certainly woke me up.

Question though... Since you are meant to give way to the right what happens when you and an oncoming car both reach the junction at the same time but he WAS indicating to go right... They would then have the right of way corrrect? Also even though he wasnt indicating I still wouldve been at fault aswell?

I just go with the 'no overtaking if there are junctions on the RHS' policy. I did it once; there was a Volvo, there was a junction, they indicated far too late, I was already committed so I pinned the throttle and hoped for the best. Never again.

Ive learned that if you start getting angry and want to overtake, then that gets pretty dangerous. Just tell yourself it ant a race and you fancy like riding your bike tomorrow as well Very Happy <-- That works well on twisties when your on a fast ride then you get stuck behind some slow driver ( As your on a rs 125 like my, youll find this, unlike the big biker boys who will just whizz past em with no effort )

I do the no-overtaking if there's a junction on either side.

a car could pull out of the junction to turn toward you, rather than in the same direction you're travelling it.

it requires a much smaller gap in trafic to turn right out a junction, than to turn left.

When i over take i want to be past them as quick as possible so i tend to keep right next to the line so i can see oncoming traffic and then i overtake but without backing of that way allmost as soon as i have started to over take i am past the car, not so much to worry about then.

Dont know if thats the right way but keeping to t he line prevents me from coming out to far and allows me to see oncoming traffic.
