Hi guys,
I have been looking at the Honda Hornet 600 as my faired bike and have seen a decent 51 plate for £2500. Looks pretty immaculate but I was wondering if any of you guys have experience with them

Is there anything I should look out for when buying it? It's a honda and has a full service history so I guess the engine should be sound enough.

Any particular good or bad points would be great.

Thanks

Rob.

Hi Rob,

In general they're reliable beasts. Just check they haven't obvious signs of having been raced (hero blobs intact, etc). Otherwise they're good bikes. I'm about to send you a pm also.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice. The pegs aren't particularly worn and the tyres, whilst not quite new, aren't worn to the edges so I don't think it's been ridden too enthusiastically.

I was hoping they were as bullet proof and reliable as I have heard, Thanks.

They're good bikes.

I wouldn't worry too much about it having been raced.

It's a honda, they tend to go forever. They're a hoot to ride aswell.
Sounds like a good price to me too.

The hornet race bikes use different rearsets, which look completely different, so maybe pristine hero blobs would indicate a raced bike.

Which obviously is silly.

So use your common sense. They're unlikely race bikes, (yes there's a racing series for them) but there's a much bigger risk of buying an ex-race bike when buying something like an R6 or a Gixxer thou.

Even then it's fairly unlikely, so I'd say an ex-race bike is a very slim risk.

I'd be more worried about the usual things, bearings, old MOTs to varify mileage, chain and sprockets, looking for crash damage etc etc etc.

thatks for the replies guys... your right about the exposed engine and I will be investing in a set of R&G's for it as soon as possible.

I was looking at an older bike for £1700. it was a '98 with 29000 miles on it and just want to make sure i'm making the right decision by paying the extra £800. Its a hell of a lot of money for me to be honest.

theres a 2002 one with damaged forks for £1400 in Halifax, but then again I'd like to see the responses to my damaged bikes/salvage thread.

I think I saw that one. The same place had a white 2005 for £2200 with damaged rear lights and number plate. Looked in pretty good nick apart from that but it was snapped up pretty quickly.

i'm honestly not sure what I would do with a damaged bike. I'm not as mechanically mided as i would like to be so i think good condition is the way to go.

Hornets are fantastic bikes, and great value for money Thumbs Up I got my unfaired 99 reg for £1200 with 7k on the clocks. But that was private. Depending on the mileage and where you're buying it from £2500 doesn't sound too bad.

There aren't really any major bad points about them. The bottom yoke always seems to be a bit rusty on Hornets for some reason, I've never seen one with an immaculate bottom yoke. Apparently the suspension and brakes aren't as sharp if you're coming from sports bikes. Also have a look at the rear shock for rust, they rust really easily without a hugger (like mine).

Just wondering on your opinion of the aftermarket cans for Hornets. This one has a carbon fibre BOS attached and doesn't seem too loud for me (i'm going for subtle). I really quite like the look of the standard one.

The guys in the garage were talking about flat spots around 3000rpm and stuff (they also said it was £375 worth of exhaust) but is it really worth having it on for the feel of the bike since I cant decide if i would like it back to standard just for its appearance.

Opinions?
