Hi ,

I've just passed my CBT , I'm getting a 125 which I'll be riding on L plates , I know I'm not allowed on motorways with L plates but what about the Blackwall Tunnel ? Is it classed as a motorway , according the map I looked at it's a A road but someone told me that it's actually a motorway . So can anyone tell me if I'm allowed through it with L plates ?

cheers

Fairly certain you're not.

It is an A road, not a motorway, but there are big signs that say "No Learner Drivers, No motorcycles under 50cc", so it has the restrictions of a motorway.

That's the sign I was talking about, looks like you can go through if you're a learner then.

Yeah it's the same as motorway restrictions but without the learner driver rule it seems.

Yeah it used to be the A102(M) from the "Sun In The Sands" junction into the tunnel years back with full motorway restrictions. Now it's no longer under motorway rules, but some of the signs still have a blue background.

They also more recently changed the designation of the road the other side of the tunnel from A102 to A12.

Since there is no motorway signage present in the pic, usually on both sides of the road, and looking like this:

That sign is very odd in that it doesn't seem to specify which side of the sign the prohibition refers to. The left side is the slip road and the right is the tunnel approach road. I reckon that you could easily argue your way out of a ticket in court if you got collared going down there on a moped (not that I'd advise it).

I'm 99% sure that the blackwall tunnel is part of the A2, therefore can be used by learners...

It's an 'A' Road. So no restrictions for learner plates. Thumbs Up

The A2 takes a left turn at the Sun in the sands and crosses over Balckheath. The road ahead becomes the A102

I'm pretty sure there's one on the right hand side of the road too, as well as the left, so it's obvious it applies to the road on the right when you go through it.

Jesus doing the bridge on a mildly windy day used to to scare the hell out of me on a 500. Be terrifying on a 50.

I also used to begrudge paying to go *into Essex* Sorry Essex people Smile

Hi All,

I would like to use scooter to go to work, but the shortest way is the A102.
Can I driver my Moped(50cc) from BOW to Sidcup. I have to use blackwall tunnel as well.
The trip is a102-a2-a20. Do you think I can use this way or not with a moped? Thank you

I never understood why the Thames barrier wasn't also a bridge. Wasted opportunity.

The only prohibitive signs I can see on the last exit before the tunnel (northbound at the A13) are no bicycles, no vehicles over 4.7m high and no vehicles carrying explosives, so a moped would seem fine.

Yes you can use a moped from Bow to Sidcup via Blackwall Tunnel. A12-A102-A20 - all A-roads.
