Did anyone just watch it on BBC1?

I was shocked to see the horrendous driving from most if not all of the participants!

One of the woman who was 93, kept mounting the kerb when driving and didn't use her indicators, she couldn't even walk unaided so how she thought she could drive I don't know!

My personal thinking on elderly people driving is I don't agree with it, and I reckon on reaching your 70th birthday your licence should be revoked totally no matter what!

When my grandmother went senile (yes senile) the Doctor wouldn't take her license off her because he thought she was safer behind a wheel than on a pavement. The police eventually banned her, however she forgot she had been banned and kept driving until we took the car off her, she then couldn't ever remember that she didn't have a car anymore Shocked

It is such a scary thought, I don't think license needs to be revoked at 70 but definately a much tighter check on who is driving and if the person is fit to drive Thumbs Up

That's age discrimination, you can't do that.

Whereas some old people are great drivers... I see more newly passed nobheads I'd like to punch out than old gits.

Fuck this birthday has brought me into the age of bitterness Laughing

Age discrimination my arse, I am concerned for safety of everyone, and looking at some of those driving yesterday it showed my views were correct.

If it is age discrimination then stopping people younger than 17 is then! Razz

one day YOU too will be old and such a law will bite you in the ass,

a test lite or assessment might be in order, and or an assessment on a case by case basis since there were some bad aged drivers but what can't be said about any group?

I couldn't live without the bike now , if I was 70 and had it removed with no recourse I'd probably kill myself.

maybe what the government wants us to do.

A carefully selected small sample just proves what the directors wanted it to prove. It would be easy to come up with similar awful samples for other age groups.

All the best

I think it would be a good idea to have some sort of re-test or review, say every 5 years.
If you can prove yourself a safe road user you get some sort of bonus or discount on your car expenses, but if you fail the review you'd have to take a full test again...??

thats certainly a danger which is why many people will not support it , I know I could pass my bike test again , but maybe not the car one , the IAM thing is good though , in that maybe NCD should be smaller and or enhanced by IAM RoSpa tests, thinking of taking a bike safe meself soon

Likely to be impossible. A 5 year retest would mean about a 10 fold increase in the number of examiners and large extra costs. Likely to just result in a lot more people driving without licences.

All the best

in my opinion we should all have to retake our tests every 10 years, just for the simple matter that it will weed out all of the bad drivers off of the road.

sure its inconvinient but Id rather do that then have my bike trashed/me killed by a driver that isnt fit to be on the road.

Just think for a second that maybe 60 years ago some of these old drivers had the lightning reflexes required to plant a bouncing bomb smack on target into the Ruhr damn, thus damn well earning the right to have a pootle the wrong way down the fast lane of the M4.

Maybe.

I'd rather not take a test every 10 years. Besides, most people are capable of driving to test standards for 40 minutes. But there's nothing to stop them driving like a twat once they are out of test conditions again.

We will never have 100% safe roads. Whille drivers have some degree of control over their vehicles, you will get accidents.

So far i havnt read about anyone on here admitting to being a poor driver/rider,so how can you judge other people's driving standards

The trouble is everyone who holds a licence thinks they are the best drivers/riders its like an addiction until you admit to your faults then this topic will always be around

It has nothing to do with innate driving skill, rather the natural increase in reaction time, decline in clear vision/thought and general lack of spatial awareness that arrive hand-in-hand with old age.

On a sample of two - I think as people get older & dodgery their driving becomes more erratic. My grandfather gave up driving at the age of 93, after hitting a car on a roundabout, not remembering that he should give way. My father in law, who is 78 is a dreadful driver - if he's not doing 20mph holding up the traffic he's doing 40mph down residential roads and can hardly walk anymore...ther comes a time in everyone's life when you just don't have the competencies to perform certain tasks - I doubt if I'll still be biking when I'm much beyond 60, as it is I'm 'slower' then a lot of the younger people who ride sports bikes!! Funny how some people will go ballistic over some minor infringement of bikers' rights, but are quite happy to take away other people's rights "because they're old".

Thumbs Down

Maybe.

What if they can't drive any more? How then, does this justify endangering children/bikers/whomever else might want to cross the road / drive in the same area?

Not because they're old, but because they're dangerous. Not all old drivers are, but the two tend to go hand-in-hand.

i read that to myself a few times, like it Very Happy

i feel that if pulled over by the plod and the officer (with his expert opinion) feels that they are unfit to drive they should be sent on somthing similar to the driver training corse, not so much a test, but a cbt to remind them wich way round a round-a-bout yo go Razz

That's very similar to what i was thinking!

I think some old drivers are dangerous, like my grandad for example, but there's an easier solution than just revoking their license when they hit 70. Rather than waiting until their license runs out when they're god knows how old, bring in a re-test age.

If everyone had to re-take their test at 75, for example, and they can't pass the standard test at that age then they simply can't be allowed on the roads anymore. No matter what age you are you need to pass your test to get on the road, so if the older generation display the necessary skills in the re-test to keep driving fair enough. If not, then they are a danger to themselves and others and that shouldn't be tolerated IMO.

Don't most OAP's get free but passes now anyway?

They would need to get down to a pretty terrible level to be as bad as someone who has just got on the road after a few hours wobbling round some cones and an overdeveloped opinion of their skills.

Not seen any calls for banning those from the road who have just passed their cbt.

All the best
