Heya..

Well I have just passed my car test ( im 17 ) today. And I am back to looking at insurance prices...

Now why is it I cant get anything, even a 1.0 for less than 2000 yet I can get a 2.0 Siera for £2700.. Yet it wont insure me on a 1600 Rs Turbo Sad

Im not gona bother with a car or these ridiculous insurances prices unless I actually have somthing that would be faster then my rs 125... Its stupid.

I can get insured on a 1000cc motorbike for £900, and they do around 180mph and do 0-60 in like 2 seconds. What the fuck is up with this insurance system.

Theres a huge world of difference between a 1.0l a RS and a shite Sierra in the eyes of the insurance companies.

Get used to it, Im 28 and still getting shafted Sad

Shocked

Thats just gay.

Why cant we have the type of insurance system that they have in Poland. The driver isnt insured, The car is. Then theres no problems about un-insured drivers as you have to buy the car with insurance.

Yep our system is a little ancient and could do with a major shake down.

Well done by the way Thumbs Up

Why do you think that Citreon keep advertising free insurance on some little sporty hot hatch? Its to get youngsters to buy them Wink

The reason you pay more in insurance is because you are unlikely to kill anyone else on a bike.
In a car, however, it's very easy and extremely commonplace for a 17-year-old to put his foot down, lose control and take out another car.

And claim and the free insurance ends.

As to the original post, they will insure you on a 2L Sierra as that is the 4 wheel equivalent of a CBF600, but not on the RS Turbo that they regard as the 4 wheel equivalent of a CBR600.

All the best

It's 19 for corsa's as my mate has just got one and i believe 19 for the citroen!

They all used to be 19 but ford lost about 5 million from a big pile up caused by a silly young boy overstretching himself on there 1 year free insurance offer!

Its sucks, but there are some ways to get insurance. You'll still be paying around 1k, probably more.

1. Get a car outside your demographic. 17 year olds buy small hatches and think they're hot hatches. They do not generally buy big cars, volvos, old mercs. You may well find a bigger car will be the same as or cheaper to insure than a small one.

2. Get your parents on the insurance. Having a middle aged female driver with a clean licence on your insurance will knock off about 30% with admiral/elephant. Do not, however, put yourself on as a named/second driver. Its illegal, when you crash you're fucked.

3. Ignore fuel economy. If you get a small car and thrash it (and you will) you'll get 25-30mpg. If you get a bigger car and thrash it, you'll get 20-30mpg. Either way, if you're doing a vaguely average mileage you might save £200 a year with a car that offers better economy, but you'll pay for the car up front, and possibly more for insurance. Don't let it be a deciding factor, £200 is nothing when it comes to running a car at 17.

4. Don't buy a total shitbox car because its cheap. It'll end up costing you loads. Spend a grand on a car and you'll get something reasonable you can sell on for a grand in a year.

5. Don't kid yourself. Its going to cost you a shitload.

Get a Rover or something, one which doesn't appeal to the high risk demographic, as Robby said. They're dirt cheap too.

The named driver thing isn't illegal, all you have to do if you do crash is say you missed the bus that day so you drove. That's the whole point of the named driver system, that you can twist the circumstances a bit so you're not raped by them if you have to claim.

He's right about the hatchback effect with young people. I have a
mate who has a 1.7 volvo that he is insured on but can't afford to be insured on a 1.0 Citroen AX. It's just the sort of car that insurance companies see as a high risk.

The worst thing about being named driver on a parents insurance is that one day in the future you have to bite the bullet and get your own no-claims. Premiums go right back up for a couple of years.

Everything about driving is expensive. There is no easy way around it i'm afraid. The cost of biking is far less, of course the risks are higher but theres the fun Very Happy

Renault Megane 1.4 Thumbs Up Only cars I could find that were cheaper to insure was a 2CV or a Fiat Cinquecento.

Mjolnir, I'd say the worst thing about being named driver on parents insure would be that you're quite fucked if you need to claim....
