Movies: Prequels and Sequels

I was quite chuffed when I see the trailer for Saw 2 and loved the film, when the wife told me about Saw 3 I wonder if this will be just an excuse to water down the genre with more pointless sequels?

With the latest craze and trends for prequels, it begs the question, why? Are the spin off movies any good compared to the original that its based on?

Aliens is better IMO than Alien and much better than Alien 3. Terminator 2 is the best out of the triology, yet I think Blade Trinity is the best of the bunch.

Terminator 1 & 2 are probably a 2 of the best films ever made, then came along number 3 & they had to ruin it by using all the new 'Special effects' before i even saw it i knew it was going to be crap because it couldn't capture the same atmosphere as the previous ones.

Madmax is again one of my best films, it was a low budget movie that did rather well on the realease, no high budget special effects just a great story, then came along Road Warrior which also had a great storyline & could easily done well without the 1st movie.

Then comes along Thunderdome they totally ruined this movie by taking away what made the first 2 great, the savageness & barbaric bad guys which gave the film a scary feel. Instead they added kids & a crap story which went the otherway to the firt 2, there's talk of a Madmax 4 without Mel Gibson.

I agree with you that Aliens is better than Alien and that Terminator 2 is better than the first and third, but I thought that Saw 2 was not as good as the first one. The first one was clever, whereas there seemed to be some silly things in the second (the guy who climbs into a fecking furnace for crying out loud...it was pretty obvious he was gonna be toasted!), not to mention the corny acting by that cop. Who knows maybe the 3rd one will be the best one?!

I just watched Final Destination 3 about 2 hours ago and thought it was great! It still fills you with adrenalin as you are waiting for the death to happen...and yet the deaths still surprise you "woah, didn't see that coming". I thought the first was good and that the second was better than the first (loved the major crash scene at the begining), but now think that the third is the best (some nice gory deaths there)!

But then you think of movies like Rocky, that seemed to get shitter as each sequel came out.

I'd quite like to see Saw 3, since I enjoyed the first two.

Alien and Aliens are not directly comparable (in my opinion). The first was deemed a horror film and the second a sci-fi/action flick, with very differing style. I like them both, but for different reasons.

Terminator 2 was a good sequel (as they go), but it lacked the originality of the original, which was fairly ground breaking at the time.

The stand out sequel for me is The Godfather II. Awesome. Lethal Weapon II is also a decent stab at a sequel.

Prequels seem to only come about when they've exhausted ideas for continuing development of the story and/or killed off the principal characters.

Aliens and T2 were far better than the firsts, got a feeling saw 3 will be utter shit.

They make sequels because they make money, the problem is it's very rare that they are as good as the original, usually just something thrown together to cash in on the success of the first.

it's called lack of creativity... something which hollywood seems to have in abundance.

It's why there are so many remakes of old films too... no creativity, no new directions to go... very rare now to actually see a new and different film that's any good.

There are so many independent film's I wouldnt know where to look. I enjoy Terry Gilliam film's myself, they always provide a source of mental stimulation with a great deal of amusement thrown in for my taste's. Hasnt releasd any new one's since The Brother's Grimm as far as I'm aware though.

Godfather 2 was as excellent as the original, because it was quite a long time after the first one came out. But the 3rd part was an obvious "greed" thing; they weren't wrapping up the story: they were just cashing in on it's fame.

But then ... I'm not complaining: any excuse to see Al Pacino

A genre loop only comes around once every few years, so they've got to squeeze as much money as possible out of the genre loop by knocking out sequel after sequel, as long as they're profitable. There are exceptions to this like James Bond and Rocky, but they're cinematic institutions now so the genre loop theory doesn't really apply to them.
