Hey quys,

i see there is some very experienced riders on this site. I am 17 in 6 days and am getting my new yamaha ybr 125 in 10 days, when i take my CBT.

I know its a small bike with no power but at £2000 OTR i didnt think i could go wrong.

I was wondering if anyone has any sensible advice for me, i havnt had a ped or anything before although my awareness is ok (i fly as a hobby).

Does anyone have any good tips for me when im on the road? anything from braking, sensible speeds, weather conditions, and modifications to my bike etc, the more help the better - i dont wanna die just yet.

thankyou guys

Dale

i voted no.

dont throw money away on a new bike. the odds are stacked against you dropping it/crashing it.

then theres the depreciation in value when you come to sell it even if you havent dropped/crashed it by then and its still mint your going to lose a lot of money.

buy a second hand bike for tless than £1000 to learn on.

you can get a 1 year old YBR for almost 1/2 that, with very few miles on the clock.

I'd look at getting a second hand bike.

thx for the comments but the £2000 price tag included my insurance, warrenty, roadside cover, helmet, clothes, gloves etc, so it would have cost me roughly the same price even if i bought a second hand one.

So does anyone have any advice for me on the road??

Watch your speed, even if it seems like you're slightly slower than you'd like to be, don't push yourself too much, too soon. Ride within your own ability.
For normal riding at a sensible, legal speed, position yourself dominant in your lane so that you don't get intimidated by drivers trying to get past.

Plan ahead rather than looking at the road immediately in front of the bike, so that you give yourself time to adjust position and/or speed in plenty of time.

... and above all, assume paranoia that anyone with more wheels than you is capable and willing to knock you off at every opportunity.

The best piece of advice is to listen to the training and experiences from your CBT instructor. I'll tell you the truth and say IMO it's quite a steep learning curve, but one of the most rewarding I've had for some time. I found the experience invaluable Thumbs Up Wink

As for the bike, it sounds like you may have had a good deal with all the goodies thrown in, but experience (and official stats) suggest that however careful you are, you're still gonna be at a high risk of losing a lot in depreciation etc during the time that you're the owner.
(I had a similar experience after buying a new people carrier some years ago, and lost rather a large wedge of money on the deal. Never again. Thumbs Down )

Having said all that, welcome to the forum, and the two wheeled community Thumbs Up Wink

you could buy a sub £300 second hand one - train on it and trade in and lose very little money a few months down the line.

welcome btw

Voted yes as thats exactly what I did Very Happy

Dont worry about it not having shit loads of power, it has plenty for a new rider. No need to go above 60mph just yet, not for me anyway. Yes you will need to change gears a lot, but think of it as good practice.
It is a small bike in terms of height, but still looks good. My friends were surprised it was a 125.
Only change I had to make was with the clutch and the bitting point. Came a little too far out for me, but easily changed. I dropped my bike within 10mins of getting it Embarassed due to this problem. After changing it, everything was fine.
Dont worry about scratching that shiny tank, if you drop it the foot rest take most of the beating. Cracked the housing on the speedo a bit, but still looks cool.

By the way, what colour did u get?

Matt

Also, it terms of advice dont do anything you dont feel comfortable doing.
So if you dont feel comfortable flitering, dont do it.
if you dont want to pull away as fast as possible, then dont.
if you dont feel safe courning at speed, slow down.
everything will come with time, ive been on the road 3 weeks and already im a hell of a lot better.

Remember! Car horns wont kill you!

No problem.
I've been on the road (on four wheels)for some-odd-*cough*-teen years already, so plenty of road experience...
but I also know what it's like to be a new biker, cos although I passed my DAS just over a year ago, I've only had my bike for the past month or so.

Just take it at your own pace, and above all stay safe Wink

cool thanks for the advice daz.

Here is what i got in the deal, just incase anyone is interested

Yamaha ybr 125
1 years third party insurance (optional upgrades for tpft)
2 years warrenty
1 years rac roadside cover
clothes, including jacket, water proof trousers, gloves.
helmet
first service is free
and a heavy duty chain and padlock which weighs a fkin tonne lol.

they were even nice enough to upgrade my boots, helmet and gloves for free lol, spent quite a bit tho as you can imagine.

Oh and btw, the colour was black, and when i went into my yamaha dealer today they said i had the last new black 06 model in the country Smile

there is only one thing i am looking to do atm, and that is get a fairing, cant get one anywhere tho, yam dealer cant, parts dealers cant, looks like im gonna have to get a universal fairing, but cant really find one i like. Anyone got any ideas on fairing/ bodywork suppliers that i can inquire to?

Welcome Dale,

If you looking progressing up the bike scale, ie CBT, couple of months on the YBR, test etc, you may be able to sell your bike onto your riding school, seems ideal for them.

Like evryone it seems I went for yteh 2nd hand option (Varadero) and loose too much of my money, also I would suggest that the gear thrown in on the bike deal would be low end stuff (cheap and cheerful), but you deem to have made your mind up. Good Luck youngen.

i would do it 2k bike new granted but your getting free insurance (say £300?) Free Rac cover (£40??) and a £500 yam check to put on your first propper bike.

so your getting a new bike for £1000 when u add your gear.

year old seconhander for £300?? lol yeah righto for that sort of money chances are your gunna be getting an old shit heap that your end up spending another £300 just getting to work propely "money well spent"

Atleast if u get the YBR your getting the peace of mind that comes with the warrenty, so if anything should happen it dont cost u a penny, and when u come to sell it a year later, if its in good nick your get good money for it, your never have problems selling a 125cc learner.

we sold 2 second hand ybrs this year for £1499 and £1599.

cheap motoring if u ask me

this has bugger all to do with me working at a yamaha shop.....just think its a bargain

I got a pre-reg ybr-125 a few weeks ago and can highly recommend them.
If you buy a pre-reg then you're not entitled to the 500 quid yamcheque, but you should be able to haggle quite a bit on the price. I got mine for about 1600 new with about 100 quid's worth of extras, and I'm not particularly good at haggling. That includes the free insurance, tax and first service. I paid an extra 50 quid for the fire&theft upgrade, but that's about it.

A lot depends on the dealer though. I'm sure there are better bargains around, especially if you're paying everything up-front.

Having said all that, I definitely reckon you've picked the right bike, but two grand seems a bit steep. Unless you're planning to take advantage of the yamcheque, you're probably better off buying a pre-reg and knocking the dealer down as far as they'll go.

I wouldnt spend so much money on a 125cc unless I planned to keep it for the long term. If you plan to move up to bigger bikes, you'd be as well to get a cheaper bike. Plus if you've never ridden before, the chances of an off are big...and its best to have your off's on cheaper bikes...

I wouldn't say that, but it wasn't a bad deal. Keep in mind the YamCheque will have all sorts of restrictions, probably including a minimum spend and quite possibly only applying to brand new bikes.

I have a YBR and i've done bout 5.5k in 10 months...

If you change the oil and try not to run it when gritters been out the bike will last forever. Thumbs Up I payed 1800 and 300 insurance on a YBR 10 months ago. The only problem i have found that in 10 months by bike has gone through 2 bulbs!

I wish i had got a dirt cheap (400/500 quid) CG125 (it would have made be take my bike test quicker) When i come to sell my bike in a few months it will only be worth 1k, I HOPE!!

The only plus is that you dont have to suffer any MOTs or a risk of your bike breaking apart at 60mph.

If your planing to keep the bike for a year i dont think it will be worth it! Neutral Its your choice

EDIT: BLACK IS THE BEST!

thanks for the comments guys.
