how do you all keep your cool?
as a biker i find that there seems to be a number of people out there with the intent of causing me serious injury through dopey driving.
Im generally not a violent person but how on earth can you not react and drag them out of their cages and give them the kicking they deserve.
Ive allready had one 'moment' that fortunatey for me didnt get me into trouble with the old bill (the door was locked) so i couldnt derag them out without putting a window through.
but the thing is... this really isnt me, im a bit of an old hippy at heart live and let live and all that.
how can i keep the red mist at bay Confused

I used to get so mad riding my bike - as you said - it seemed like people were heart-set on wiping me out! But maybe I've just mellowed out a bit with time, or maybe I've just realised that most people in cars really haven't got a clue, so I therefore ride as defensively as possible - expect that idiot to pull out of that junction, or that fool not to yield on the roundabout - then I'm ready to react! Mind you I still get red-mist moments, but not as much as I used to! Wink

Tailgate and shout abuse. Let off a bit of steam at the fuckers, otherwise they are none the wiser and you feel a bit, well, mugged off for the rest of the day.

It's instinct. I've tried my very hardest to not get involved at times, but it is just instinct, someone comes close to fucking up your ability to walk through their negligence... you can't take that up the arse, you have to let them know.

I know exactly how you feel but i've progressed from feeling the need to tail gate etc... i generally pull along side them now in a low gear, give a friendy beep on the horn then offer the one fingered salute Middle Finger

or perhaps a slow motion w a n k e r sign for the blokes then just crack the throttle open & crack some ear drums with a good parp from the zorst..... Twisted Evil

sad i know but it helps to relieve the tension in these moments... Wink

Now, I tell myself they are stupid dullards. In my past I took other actions, one of which lead to this situation: -

White van man on a motorway roundabout is indicating to leave at the next exit, I (foolishly) trust the indicator and go for the overtake, WVM keeps going round the roundabout...... Surprised I hit the side of the van, but stay on the bike as it's a very low angle of attack, WVM hears the impact and stops, winds window down and start to voice his opinion of my riding, his view is not valid in my opinion so I get hold of his shirt and drag him through his van window, my right arm is fully cocked to break his nose when I realise it wont move, there is a suspicuous lime green colour behind me........ Sad

The copper (bike plod) tells me to "go over there and sit down, NOW", I take this 'advice'.

About ten minutes later the bike cop tells me he wont do me for ABH, or threatening and that he's just nicked WVM for due care, if I'd it WVM it would have been GBH he was charging me with Sad

I was lucky that time, I doubt I'd be that lucky again, if I decided to hit someone, they'd not walk away from it so I'd be in gaol, no paypacket, no beer, no girlies..... Amazing how perspective and a few years can mellow a person.

I usually restrain myself to pulling alongside them and banging on their roof or something.

Then I usually take it out on the bike. Give it a real good hiding with massively illegal high speed filtering (average speed on the motrway 80mph? I'll weave through it at 120) and general thrashing. After a while at "warp speed" I generally calm down again. Got to burn off the adrenaline somehow or I'd haul off and thump someone and I only know of one way to do it.

Tend to yell a bit at them, purely for my benefit, but I'll also give them some easy to interpret hand signals. But no-one learns from it and I'm not hanging around the idiot who nearly killed me, so I leave it there and blitz off at high speed.

In an extreme case I'd be tempted to boot their door in or mirror off.

It would take a hell of a lot to provoke me to strike the first blow.

Talking of that Siggi , did you ever catch up with the fuckwit who tried to kill you and your mate the other week ?

Had a little mishap the other day. Ashamed to say I gave in to the adrenalin for the first time in many years and confronted the driver. I was met by a little bloke who was angry, confused (he didn't know what he'd done I guess, no excuse though) and scared by what he thought I may do to him.
I just stopped. What the hell was I thinking? Was I going to beat the guy up? How much of a beating was I going to give him? A little slap? More? Pathetic. I was more disturbed by my behavior than the original incident. He was a tosser in what he did but it didn't legitimise my reaction. I beat myself up about it instead and told myself that if I react like that better not go out on the bike.

I'm an angry little boy Laughing

When i was test riding a K6 GSXR 600 i had a twat pull over from the slow lane straight across the fast lane to do a U turn and he was doing about 40 when the speed limit is 80.

What did i do? Slammed on the brakes, did the U turn and rode next to him for a bit before sticking my fist through his window and knocking his mirror off.

Fucking cunt.

You must be right, 38 degrees with my head wrapped in a fooking helmet and humidity at about 80%...not pleasant!

It's cooling down a bit now, night riding season is kicking in again Very Happy

Heh! Shame I haven't progressed to riding one-handed yet, so all I can do is shake my head and think evil thoughts about whizzin past 'em with me left leg out an takin their wing mirror with me.

Rage does tend to cloud my judgement when I'm in the car though, have already had a bump and few more near misses whilst hangin out of the window givin out some verbal damage Rolling Eyes

Perhaps best leave it at the headshake I think.

It's a real difficult situation, part of you is high on adrenaline after having a close call and your anger will tend to come bubbling out. The problem, as was pointed out, is that half the time the other driver doesn't even know what they have done.

If they just put their hand up and say 'sorry mate', this is usually enough to diffuse the situation. The one thing that REALLY gets me is when they know they have done something wrong but they try to say it's your fault or give you a bunch of abuse. A few years ago that situation resulted in me being arrested and cautioned, luckily I got away with it but it made me think twice about reacting.

The other problem, as also pointed out, is that you then ride too aggressively for the next few miles, probably taking chnces you wouldn't normally take.

I find a gentle 'wanker' signal or pretending to pull a gun and shoot them makes me feel better!

the funny thing is the other night i had a dream that i was expecting a jail term for road rage, now i know its only a dream but at the time it seemed SO real, ( i dont want to sound like a pussy but that dream did frighten me, i wont let anything come between me and my loved ones)
so now i try to rise above any provocations by divs and wont lower myself to their level,
i dont mean to sound holier than thou but life is just too short

Strange, I usually find it hard to keep my cool, but riding incidents don't usually get to me that much, maybe because I anticipate their stupidity before they cut me up. Some shouting and the use of my horn will suffice though. I will often shout at myself/sheep/anyone who hears, if I do a stupid manouvre and nearly crash. So if you ride past a 2 stroke whose rider is shouting "FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCK", then it could be me. Wink
