PostPosted: 16:28 - 20 Oct 2006    Post subject: Sir David Beckham? Reply with quote

Just heard this in the car, I actually just sat there shaking my head

Quote:
It has been rumoured that Prime Minister Tony Blair will be putting footballer David Beckham’s name forward for the New year’s honours list.

Blair believes that Beckham’s charity work and run as England’s captain have made him worthy of the honour that would see him named Sir Beckham.

This move would not only make David a Sir, but Victoria a Lady!

A source told the Star: “The Beckham’s are already showbiz royalty and now they look set to move a step closer to the real thing. It is widely believed that that Tony Blair will put David forward for a knighthood in the New Year list.

“He was a fantastic skipper for England, and there’s every chance he will be back. He’s also done a tremendous amount for children and the community.

“His football academies, including the flagship one in London, are a fabulous gift for future generations.

“He contributed a huge amount to the successful London Olympic bid and you can see the quality of man he is by the loving way he is with his family and others. The PM would get enormous credit for getting David knighted.”

Lady Beckham…oh dear!

What are your views on the type of people that are getting Knighthoods and OBEs these days, are they ten a penny and more peer pressured into it rather than truely deserved?

Shocks me to think you can be labelled with what used to be the UK's most prestigous award for cunting about a field in shorts for a couple of hours a time

I don't like football and don't think titles like that are really relevant to anything in my life. However, I'd probably be giving a Thumbs Up if a bike racer got one, as New Labour's policies pander to the people's whim, I could quite understand it happening.

The rather sad thing is that the Beckhams probably /have/ done more than many as far as getting England good publicity internationally.

Why is there an apostrophe in "Beckhams"?

Depends how it's being used.

"The Beckham's home is worth a squillion pounds", would be correct.

"A source told the Star: “The Beckham’s are already showbiz royalty" would be wrong, as in the article.

From the above:
Quote:
Beckham’s charity work and run as England’s captain have made him

Quote:
The Beckham’s are already showbiz royalty and now

Presume he's talking about the lower example.
Believe it or not, people do make typos out there in the real world as well Smile.

Some very quick research, wasn't quite what I was remembering, however:
Quote:
From the 12th century, the concept continued being tied to cavalry, mounted and armoured soldiers. Because of the cost of equipping oneself in the cavalry, the term became associated with wealth and social status, and eventually knighthood became a formal title. Significantly the nobility, who at this time were also expected to be leaders in times of war, responded to this new class by becoming members of it. Nobles had their sons trained as gentlemen and as professional fighters in the household of another noble. When the young man had completed his training he was ready to become a knight, and would be honoured as such in a ceremony known as "dubbing" (knighting) from the French "adoubement". It was expected that all young men of noble birth be knights and often take oaths swearing allegiance, chastity, protection of other Christians, and respect of the laws laid down by their forebears, though this varied from period to period and on the rank of the individual.

So it seems at one point at least, it was basically an awful lot of 'nobles' composing the knights.

Again, from what I remember, the nobles of those times managed to get and keep their titles by doing as you described.

In reality Siggi those people would have been oppressive rulers who licked the ass of whatever king/queen was in power of the time and actually did fuck all but sit around making other people's lives hell.

To be fair I think Beckham has probably done alot more work for charity than the media would have you beleive. I don't think he warrant's a Knighthood, but then again I think they're pointless anyway.

The current rulers of the time would have hardly given a title to someone they dispise now would they, so yes it may have gone to the brown nosers.

Does David Beckham and the like actually donate their money to the charities or are they merely a 'face' that advertises it with some column inches in the papers?

Name something that he has actually done apart from football.

Ian Botham was a national treasure in his day (apart from the drugs incident Embarassed ) and he has done shed loads of charity work and put his body on the line and is soon with another national walk.

So why has he no knighthood? Because he speaks his mind?

There's a small football place near me which I beleive he has put money in to, he certainly attend's it occasionally as I have noticed a large entourage arriving/leaving the place.

This place take's kid's from extremely poor and dangerous area's/family's and gives them some enjoyment, it also stops them from being turned into criminals by the people/area that they live with/in. It could perhaps give them a career as well.

Whether or not you like football or agree with David Beckham, or indeed the money that these kid's could earn, it's better than the other likely option.

Allthough why the government don't provide more youth centre's is beyond me and is another topic altogether. Smile

Not really that was more the work of nobles and with the many wars and the crusades of the medieval peroid its quite certain that all knights would of seen action at some point especially during the crusades as they sore it as they duty as knights to do the bidding of the papacy and to defend the christians of the holy land.

I believe Reuben was talking about 'reality'.

In reality we have codes of conduct that say you will not rob, take drugs or speed. Officers of the law have codes of conduct that say they will not make up evidence, the army has codes of conduct that says they will try not injure non-combatants, etc, etc.

History goes to those who have power.

Precisely what G said.

Many beleive Samurai warrrior's to have been great fihter's for what is right, for the people. In reality (at least towards the end of their traditional existence from my knowledge) they turned out to be nothing more than greedy power hungry murderer's and thieves. I beleive these so called Knight's were much like this.

The myth/story is always better than reality.

The first military orders such as the Hospitallers/Templars/Teutonic knights went to the extreme of selling all there lands and possessions to care for the sick and poor as well as acting as highly trained/well equipped heavy cavalry, very selfless thing to do when you could sit at home living it up like a noble.

Generally knights were well off educated gentlemen who had the money and family to proved them with training from a very early age to become elite professional soldiers with the best equipment and wepons you could buy at the time and part of the club is that you follow the code and don,t act like a complete cu*t, bit of a mix of bad and good people just like any group in society.

The thing is "knights" of the realm were called upon to defend the land, can you imagine David Jason Anthony Hopkins Bob fucking Geldof and Beckham stepping up to stop inavding armies?

Actually it would probably work as they would all shit themselves laughing at our "Defenders" and die from shitting there guts right out

Surely the thought of Lady Victoria Beckham is enough to reject this potential knighthood.
