Changing fork seals

I severely busted both fork seals on my bike , such that I was elaving a trail of oil , I discovered this comming of snake pass , lucky me,

I can get fork seals + Bushes for £10 ,

I have the tools , so its just a simple case of:

remove front wheel

undo the top yoke
undo the bottom yoke ,

undo the mud guard

slide out fork ,

pull the fork leg and stanchion apart

remove knackered bush and fork seal + dust cap

clean it up

pour in fresh oil measured ,

slide bush in correctly + fork seal

then press back the forks together? !

reinsert forks

put back on wheel + caliper , and its like that right? (note I have a haynes) and no bike garage has a free slot till Thursday.


any thoughts?

You left out one hard part.Undo the bolt at bottom of the fork before
trying to pull them apart.What bike is it.

...and loosen the tube top nut a bit before you loosen the yokes, easier done when the forks are being held by the yokes then you don't need a vice or similar.

Hi

Pretty much. Often you can slacken the bolt on the bottom of the fork first (basically using the fork spring to stop the internals from spinning). Also slacken the fork cap a touch before dropping the forks out.

£10 is pretty cheap for seals and bushes.

On some bikes you need to bodge a tool to hold the internals while you undo the bottom nut.

If you've got access to an air/electric impact wrench, it makes this much easier if it's hassle.

So...
slide out fork ,

Undo top of fork fully.

Catch items as fork internals spring out

Empty fork oil.

Undo bottom nut.

pull the fork leg and stanchion apart

Check there's no one around as it looks like your repeatedly wanking the fork (can take quite a few goes to get 'em out).

Thanks for your prompt responses! , I found a fork seal kit from ESB £7.99 per side but the guy gave them both to for £10 as he was having a fantastic day and wanted to brighten my day , and he did.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Yup mine are OEMs ,

not that I've had much luck I took the dust cap off the top of the fork , and didn't have the tool to undo the bolt at the top ,

as its an inee bolt rather than an outie , such that I'm just removing the forks to take it down to a bike shop to get it done instead to save labour costs.
