going down a little lane inbetween some fields(still tarmac road),only doing about 25mph,the road was covered with leaves and ground was damp but i didnt think much of it.pressed the front brake and the front wheel just started sliding straight away, let go o the brake and tryed the rear(really panicking at this point Smile and that sent the back end around towards the front.let back off that and just had to use the gears to get the speed off.had the bike fishtaleing all over.being an off road style bike i just thought it would have had a bit more traction than that.
is there something else i can do to stop if i ever get in that situation again...

The answer's in the question. Think about what the road conditions are like and know how to deal with them. That's just something you get with experience though. Be grateful you didn't drop it, and remember this for next time. Thumbs Up

A locked back end will stop you faster than no brakes at all, though in that situation the engine is the best way to brake if you've no confidence in the tyres. Use all the road if it's clear to avoid braking on leaves/ gravel/ whatever. Look far enough ahead to see adverse road conditions before you get to them and think about the what the road is doing before you have to brake on it.

Smoothness and planning well ahead is the name of the game as with almost everything in biking/ driving. Harsh inputs on the throttle, steering or brakes can and will land you in trouble. Experience is what you need most of, but you can only get that by practise, and mistakes will happen.

yup i spose it is all experience...if i thought the conditions were that bad i would have slowed right down for sure, but the roads leading to the one i slipped on were fine a bit damp still but not slippy.must have been the leaves but i didnt think they would make the surface sooo slippy.
my plan was to keep the back wheel locked until it stopped but as soon as the wheel locked i couldnt stop it from going sideways...
im going to find a quiet road somewhere to practice on the morra.
it doesnt seem to be the kind of thing you can just be told, just have to keep on trying till i get it right..... Karma

Yep, put it down to experience. Wont be the last time you do something to upset the bike. You controlled it so take a bit of courage from that. Just make sure you learn from it Thumbs Up
Never assume the road is perfect, cos 99% of the time it isnt Thumbs Up

Best to assume thats 100% of the time though, sunbear!

Last time I had the back step out I had a mate on the back-consider trying to wrestle around with a bike whilst trying to keep your pillion still on. Hard work. Shocked
