hi ya all,

I recently bought a rebuilt Bantam D7 (well a D7 engine in a D14 Frame) A neighbour and I managed to get it started once, it ran very high revs for a while then died. We have started the bike a couple of times since but not run for long. Now I dont seem to be able to start the bloody thing.

A bike enthusiast has checked over the bike as well as my neighbour and I and we have come to the following conclusions:

Timing and spark spot on (or at least not way off)
Petrol clean as I have drained the tank and checked flow using translucent pipe.
Wiring is ok but a few shabby bits
Battery may well be dead (ordered a new heavy duty)
exhaust a bit oily but not dripping when I kick start like originally
Carb clean but possible leak
Float ok as far as I can see (the float needle sticks a bit)
compression seems ok but not investigated thoroughly

I have heard all sorts about dried out crank case seals but dont really understand the principle, Im a bit new to this u see.

I would be much oblidged of any suggestions

Thanks for your time

Mark

Oh, just thought, the throttle stop screw seems to have been snapped, the end of the srew is in there but nothing left to adjust

Just a rough guess.

It sounds like you've got an air leak somewhere on the intake of the carb.

I'd say double check the ignition timing first, but I think you may have done that already Smile

High revs might mean it's running very lean, so a possible air leak or your sticky needle (possibly leading to low level in the float chamber) both need looking at.

Leaness would also make it a bear to start.

it does run, so I wouldn't go tearing the engine apart just yet...

Agreed, just because it sparks outside the engine, doesn't mean it does inside.

And is it a 'good' spark. Fat and blue and jumping between the electrode and tang of the plug.

Mate of mine runs Bantams and the ignition system is constantly fucking up on them. He reckons the minimum number you need to own in order to ensure one of them is alway running is six.

or you could always throw the engine in the bin and replace it with an MZ one Wink Laughing

getting an electronic ignition kit would be a good mod, they are readily available (just buy a copy of classic bike guide) and i think are about 40 quid, might solve the problem and even if it dosent makes them hell of a lot more reliable

I have bought a couple of new spark plugs, when I kick the bike it fires but doesnt run, better than what i was getting before, petrol leaks from the bottom of the carb. The engine fires then dies, the if i attempt to kick it again nothing, I have found that if i take the plug out then kick it once or twice then replace it in the engine the bike tries to start again.

it sounds like you float needle isn't seating properly and letting to much fuel through, you might ned to recondition the carb,
just a guess on my part of course Thumbs Up
