Need your help chaps.
A mate of mine has married a mexican lady and they have come up with a plan to import mexican chilli's and sauces etc...
So he has got a website up and running, but needs some flyers to send to cookery colleges and nightschools.
As i work in a printing company i said i would run him off some flyers.
He wanted 1000 A3 Full colour double sided. He gave me the artwork which i sent through to our repro dept, and 2 hours later voila !! there they are.
I told him it would cost about £30 ( mates rates, right ? ), what with it being half a ream of paper and im cutting it myself, so no real hassles.
Unfortunately when i asked the boss how much would it cost to do the job he has come up with
£125 Shocked
So. What do i do.......
best plan seems to be tell my mate its actually £50, put £50 in myself pay it as a cash job and remember never to offer to help a mate again. Embarassed

Tell him the truth and ask him what you both should do about it.

How about doing the half and half thing, but telling your mate and saying you'll cover the other half, but you expect a load of gratis samples etc when they've got going a bit (presuming you like chilis, of course) Smile.

That's a pretty good rate anyway, tell your mate you didn't anticipate it and ask if that's an OK price.

Did the boss get the price wrong. Did you explain the above? Would he maybe understand?

Hmm, i think i will have to own up. The annoying thing is that the guy in repro set it up wrong. Its supposed to be English on the front Spanish on the back, but its the same language on both sides. Why the hell would i want the same language on both sides ??

If they did it wrong, can't you use that as a "well, I don't want this, defintiely not paying full price for this if at all" kind of thing?

Well it seems your blunder was to tell your boss. Wink

When I worked at a print shop a few years ago, any jobs like that were held over until the evening when we had to "stay behind" to "catch up". WINK WINK. Especially if it was just photocopying. Litho printing was a bit harder as I had to get one of the other lads to do it for me.

Could have made a fortune if I advertised my services a bit better.

I would tell him the truth.....you cant be putting in £70 or whatever out of your own the money.

Just say I am really, really sorry but the printing came to far more than you orginally planned. Show him some proof though, or he may think you are trying to rip him off.

own up to it , humans these days are so weasely that owning up is a big thing, and it will likely offer less consequences than hiding the fact.

Oh no, it gets worse...
I was just about to come clean and tell my boss what i have foolishly done, when nthe MD comes storming into the office ranting about how we are making no money and if we dont get some decent jobs in the accountant says we might as well shut up shop and walk away ... Confused
I decided it wasn't a good time.

Surely there are more important things to worry about in your life?

Tell your mate it's £130, show him a reciept, job done. If you put your own money to cover the fact you dropped a bollock then you sir are an idiot.

Tell your mate the real cost (if he can afford to have a website built another £90 for the flyers ain't gonna make a big difference)..as way of recompense tell him you are going to post the link on a forum where there are thousands of people interested in hot chilli sauces!! Wink
