Big Problems!

Hello when i was on my 2001 Yamaha Aerox 50 i opened the throttle and the bike started to splutter. I closed the throttle and opened it again, this time all the revs cut out and the bike stalled. I have not been able to start the bike since. What is the fault?
Any replies really appreciated

mine did that when the spark plug had worn out.

Thanks for the reply . I will put a new spark plug in tomorrow and see what happens.

Ok i put a new plug in and tried to start it up. It starts but wont idle and if you rev it to much it dies. I looked over the bike and noticed the air box has got bad cracks in it and is letting in more air! Could this be the problem? I dont have a great knowledge of mechanical things but from past experiance it seems like water in the petrol? Dirt in the jets?
hope someone can help me with what is wrong with it.

if its getting too much air itll run lean and will conk out from not enough petrol

Thanks for all the replies people,really appreciated . I went and looked at the air box. It has around three major holes of which are about 1 inch high and half an inch wide. Also it appears that inside the air box is dirty. I took the box out and cleaned the large rubber hose which slides on over the carb inlet. I cleaned the box out and tried to slide the rubber hose thing back on but its too tight. Is there any tricks to getting these things on?
