Tell you what pisses me off about this whole debate.

I don't have the option to ride my bike without a helmet, I am required to be wearing it by law.

So who then has the right to ask me to remove a piece of clothing that I have no choice about wearing in the fist place? Evil or Very Mad

I'm with Keith. When I go for petrol I want to fill up and be on my way without holding up others or wasting my own time. As someone who wears glasses I find it very awkward removing my helmet (gloves off, glasses off - where to put them safely? Helmet off, glasses back on, where to put helmet whilst fumbling for money in pocket - can't get it ready first cos need both hands to take off glasses and helmet Rolling Eyes then reverse the whole procedure) So if I can't keep my helmet on I don't use the petrol station. If I am in a place I don't know and HAVE to stop I will try to avoid anywhere that has a sign on the pump saying I must remove my helmet. No sign on the pump = no chance of taking my lid off, either take my money or don't, their choice.

This is brilliant(apart from a touch a racism).

So, it seems the majority of this is down to time. Would you go without wiping your bum to save a minute?

I mean honestly, if its a problem with time, then learn to fill up when your not in a rush. I fill up on the way home usually. So, im gonna be 10 minutes longer, big deal.

Its manners to show your face(regardless of being a potential criminal). Biking is not a religion(although maybe it should be)and therefore we should respect the wishes of others.

All of you `im keeping my lid on` are the biking equivalent of this;

No, it's down to choice. You may not like it, but you don't get to dictate to me what I wear or where I wear it. Neither do pump-jockeys.

It's that simple.

Im not dictating to you.

Choice huh, well, it seems you have. The man has asked you remove your gear before he serves you, you cant be arsed. So you ride off into the horizon. Your wasting more time looking for another fuel station, not to mention adding more pollution because of a wasted journey.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I really dont care what you do(although i shall always imagine fidgety biker`s haven`t wiped their bums from now on Laughing ). You`ve already said that these people are beneath you basically, and now your trying it on with me. I don`t care who you are, or what you do. The person at the station has choice too, he asked you to remove your helmet. Would you do the same if they asked you to stop a mobile phone chat?

Your attitude stinks pal. You can say what you like, it boils down to lazyness(which is hilarious).

And after all, if YOU dont like what I post, you don`t have to read it. That is choice.

I don't particularly like standing around with my lid on when filling up or at any time so I generally take the thing off. It's easier to pop off the lid and remove my headphones than it is to fish about in a pocket to fumble with the phone/mp3 player to switch it off. Then again, I've at times been in a rush and not taken the lid off with no problems from the staff.

However, If I chose not to remove my lid and they were either rude/refused to serve me or both and demanded I removed it then I would refuse out of principle. It's usually asked so that they can "serve you better" which is a cop out excuse. So, I need to inconvenience myself because your staff have poor customer service skills? How about you just admit to the real reason? At least be honest about it. If it's for "crime prevention" then just say so. I'll still keep the lid on as I do not like being branded a potential criminal simply due to the mode of transport I have chosen to use. But I'll at least respect you slightly more for being honest even though your policy stinks...

K.

I keep it on when putting petrol in but then gloves and helmet off, gloves in helmet and hung on the bike somewhere.... it doesn't take much boyos and girlos. Thumbs Up

Although in a rush I'll leave my lid on, but that's only when I need to be somewhere (which isn't ver often Laughing )

Thing is, even once it's off, do they provide somewhere for me to put it?
I can't rest it on my tank, as it would then be covering the fuel cap.
I'm not putting it on the floor as it's going to have so much shit down there from years of fuel spillages.
I'm not going to hang it on a wing mirror as if I knock the bike it could fall off.
So I have no where to put it, I could rest it on the pump, but then someone using the pump the otherside could knock it off.

The people who made the rule clearly have never ridden a bike and have no idea what inconvenience is.

i wouldn't personally drop the hose on the floor, but in the offensive frustration of not getting fuel as you won't take ya lid off, i don't think that is right, i'm not racist at all, but they can't ask an ethnik to take off a 'turburn', why the hell should we take lids off? is it not the same priciple?

i am known at my local texaco by face (who do have a sign up to the topic effect), and the local asda don't enforce such a policy when filling up, but i think next time i am asked to take it off i will;
Ask them if they have anywhere to put your helmet, but also inform them that if they drop it, it will need to be replaced before you leave.

Don't forget to tell them about the cost of replacing it aswell.

Lay it on extra thick, they can't refuse to serve you cos you've got a tank full they need you to pay for!

there is nothing they can do except take the sign down, make exception to you OR be very delicately careful with it and hold it for you but would you trust them? there is a big chance they don't understand what position they put you in if they damage it and there is a lot of mixed thought on this so what is the best ammicable solution?Confused

yes it is thats why i can and do lift my visor up and they can see my face if they realy want to.
Its about choice, if some of you want to take your helmet off then thats ok, but there are those of us for whatever reason, time, inconvenience or just prefer to be out riding the bike instead of getting re-dressed that dont, I would just like to choose whether I take my helmet off or not, not be told to do so by someone else

Not really. There are dozens of petrol stations around and if the odd one refuses to serve me then I can carry on with my journey to the next one. After that it is no hassle at all to avoid the station that is that arrogant towards its customers.

All the best

Just out of curiosity, would you follow the same mentality when stopped by the police?

Personally, i havent had a problem either way. I`ve yet to come across someone who hasn`t been polite about me removing stuff. And i think gloves are a bigger ball ache too.

One thing i forgot to mention was to back up an earlier post. Free air, surely they make enough money not to need us to fund their compressor?

@Bazza. Already dealt with. Life`s too short etc.

Just to balance this out, I don't have a problem with signs on the pump saying something like "Motorcyclists please remove helmet" - garages can make their own policy, after all.

(Stray thought - would that make them liable for any damage caused to a helmet as its removal could be interpreted as a condition of sale?)

If I'm on reserve or don't have time to get to another station, I'll comply like a good little sheep - and never go back there again, obviously.

We in Chelsea & Fulham not only fill up with our helmets on while sitting on our bikes, but we then ride our bikes to the side of the petrol station, where we leave them to go in and pay, leaving the pump free for the next customer.

Yeah but that petrol station is so tiny its hardly surprising. Cheap to.

For me whenever this happens i am down to fumes, so my freedom to go somewhere else is gone, i get livid.

It has happened a couple of times at stations i have visied the previous or even same day... so it is clealy not store policy, just that that clerk thinks i look like a thief.

There seems a divide on here between the so called "polite and rude"... Sounds more like to me The FWB and Sunday superheroes vs those of us who ride many miles day in day out in all conditions.

For me at least it is a major hassel taking off helmet gloves and balaclava to fill up.

This topic annoys me to the extent i cant be bothered to exmaine all aspects of the argument...

Middle Finger Heres a big FUCKYOU to all the little weasels that have asked me to take off my lid.

The problem is not wether to remove a helmet, it's the assumption
that we are going to steal ie guilt before innocence. I have wondered if fuel stations assume hajib wearers to be guilty, too.

Well, here is my contribution after it finally happening to me.

I went to my local (Note: Local, use it alot) Tesco petrol station/shop... About... 11:30pm. They're open 24/7.

Anyway, I put my fivers worth in, walk into the shop, get in line to pay.

I'm stood there for about 30 seconds or so and I hear "Can you take your helmet off", I look over, there's some chubby young security lad stood peering over at me... I reply by shaking my head and saying No.

"Take your helmet off" he repeats, to which I say louder "No!".

He marches over, acting the big man "Take your helmet off or you aren't being served".... I tell him that i'm not going to, and bring up the question of wether he asks muslims to remove their veils... He didn't have an answer, and instead told me "It's law!". "No it isn't, you prove to me it's the law and I'll take it off Rolling Eyes " (Even if he did, I doubt he would have managed to in the time it takes to serve me for petrol.

Anyway, he kicked off, I kicked off. I left my money on the counter. He told me to pick it up and pay for my fuel. I did pay for the petrol, with my helmet on, and went to leave after another arguement with the fool.

By the time i'm leaving and heading for the bike it's got to him calling me a dickhead (Yeah, real professional), and telling me i'm banned...

Anyway, that bike is sold now so i'll be having fun next time I go on the new bike... Anyone want a recording of round two?

Edit: There is/was no sign on the door asking me BEFORE I enter to remove my lid.

On the same vane, I went to a branch of Macros (cash and carry) the other day and was refused entry to the store because I had a helmet with me (being carried not worn).
They have a sign up stating no motocycle helmets, no pushchairs and no prams.
While I was discussing my options with the manager (i.e leaving it behind the front desk where he would personally guarantee its safety but would not give me a receipt for it or replace it if it got damaged in my absence!) they let through half a dozen mums with buggy's and push chairs!
I asked him what about them and his response was we can check their buggy for stolen goods before they leave we can't check your helmet!
Branded a thief before I have even got through the front door! Made me feel really good that did!
