I still wonder which grip is correct. Please give me your advises.
I like type (B.) because I felt it easier to brake quickly after I find something on the road. I used to be type (F.) but I couldn't do quick braking after I found a car suddenly rushed out in fromt of me from the side narrow road, and hit my bike to the curve.
I ride W650 and brake is very poor, I can't full lock with one finger.
I found some riding lecture books but they didn't show type (B.).
Usually (D.),(E.), and (F.). Why???

<Grip types : Pull brake lever with . . .>
(A.) 1st finger only (always on brake lever)
(B.) 1st & 2nd fingers (always on brake lever)
(C.) 2nd finger only (always on brake lever)
(D.) 2nd & 3rd fingers (always on brake lever)
(E.) 2nd & 3rd & 4th fingers (always on brake lever)
(F.) All fingers (only when you brake)

I dont think there is a "right" grip.
I personally allways ride with my middle finger (c?) on the brake, as you said just incase someone bolts infront of me or in general slow moving traffic.

I generally grip the throttle with my index and thumb more than anything else, so useing my index and middle finger for the brake wouldent be easy.

A good point I meant to mention in the filtering thread.

If the bike has suitable brakes, I will filter with first two fingers on the brake lever all the time. Otherwise I will use four fingers as required.

When racing on track I will generally use two fingers when required - if this works for you it gives the maximum control of brakes and throttle I find.

Also useful for doing burnouts / donuts Smile.

I cover lever with first 2 finger when filtering.

Otherwise, I wrap all 4 fingers round the throttle.

I found if I was covering the brakes, I was much more prone to panic breaking, even if that wasn't the best response. With fingers curled round the throttle, I've got the time it takes to move my fingers to consider if swerving or accelerating are a better response.

I'm mostly a type B. After riding bikes with drum front brakes, the occasions where I have to grab a fistful is very, very rare.

I felt the same thing, when I started (B.) Index and Middle fingers on brake lever, I must grip the throttle with thumb and medical and little fingers. It's hard to wide open(!). So I usually open and move hand and open .... I felt the same thing. It's difficult to controll(widely) without index finger!

Change grip style case by case. I must learn more!

Thank you for techniques! I'll try controlling throttle without index and middle.

Sorry for bad english Embarassed

Don't apologise for your English - it's a lot better than some natives, and a hell of a lot better than our Japanese Smile

Wow that is my biggest weak point! I can't judge in panic mode!
I must learn more and more...

I forgot to write this Embarassed . At driving/riding school or testing center in japan, we must brake with all fingers at test. If I brake with 2 fingers, points deducted Shocked . Very unreasonable.
It's shame to tell that riding test / lecture in japan are done only in closed place.(no test / lecture on open road Embarassed) And encounter panic mode and did panic brake with all fingers, and broke my CB400SF Embarassed Embarassed

I never have covered the brake (Like shaggy, I've been riding with drums for about 14 months)

Most pant shitting situations I have used power to get out of it rather than brakes, which would've resulted in an accident had I of used them.

2nd 3rd and 4th fingers, but only when I brake, never cover the front brake unless I expect to have to brake suddenly (approaching blind junctions etc).

all fingers on throttle while riding, use 2 fingers to trim speed off on corner entry etc, and all 4 fingers when stopping to get maximum stopping power Thumbs Up

Note that with decent brakes you shouldn't need to - on a decent sports bike I could stoppy with two fingers from 130mph+ - don't really need any more power than that.

On something like my 25 year old BMW four fingers are more useful!

Someone pulling out on me close, swerved and opened the throttle up.

Someone rolling towards a junction and pulling straight out (Powered past them)

On a dual carriageway on the righthand (Overtaking) lane, someone in centra reservation wanting to turn onto the overtaking lane on my side, I moved out to white line and they as I predicted carried on pulling out right beside me, used power to get past them before they clipped my leg.

There is no right answer.

Using a grip that feels right to you is far more important and safe than using a grip someone else considers to be correct.

My 2c anyway.

I do B when filtering at low speed, when approaching a roundabout, traffic queue at slow speed etc.

Rest of the time I have a handfull of throttle, and when breaking hard have all 4 fingers on the lever.

Thanks for your comments. They were all very informative for me.
I'll try and practice various grips in each cases.

I always have all fingers on throttle and four fingers when braking. I was told off by my instructor during DAS for leaving any fingers on the front brake. As he correctly pointed out, you should never be braking and using the throttle at the same time, so shouldnt be resting fingers on the brake whilst you are using the throttle?? Some may disagree with this advice, but works for me. But yeah, use whatever grip is comfortable for you m8.

Hi

Tend to use all 4 fingers on the brakes, and cover the brakes with all 4 fingers. Still easy enough to blip the throttle when changing gear.

All the best

Keith

I was taught by instructor the same. But I found it hard to move fingers from throttle to brake lever quickly in a panic mode. I tend to lock rear brake and no front brake. Is it only me?
Now I use this to help controlling throttle, a little bit wrong way though. I must reverse throttle intensionally instead.

"cover the brakes" means keep fingertips touching levers or keep fingers fully covering the lever? I am too nervous...

Hi

Keep my fingers over the lever ready to pull the brakes.

Do the same for the clutch as well, but that is too many years of riding 2 strokes.

All the best

Keith

Do keep in mind that if you put any pressure on the lever, the brake lights would be ON, and if continous, might annoy drivers behind you!

Cheers,

All 4 fingers on the grips unless I need to use the clutch or the brake and then it's all 4 on the relevant lever. I only covr the clutch when doing slow moves and need to set the clutch at the biting point then use rear brake contro to vary speed....

Normally need a noticeable amount of pressure on the lever to operate the brake light.

All the best
