i have about 15 ideas for bikes that ive never heard any one any wear mention a sniff about, i also have about 60 designs for alloy wheels, and sevral ideas about non petrol powered cars.

and i would like to patent them so when i eventualy get some one in the bussiness to listen to me they may take more notice.

Some say it's pointless these days. A big company can steal your idea and you wouldn't have the money or shit hot lawyers to fight it.

Chances are whatever ideas you have are already covered under other patents anyway.

Sorry to be doom and gloom.

You register a patent at a patent office. Fill in the relevant form with details of the invention.

generally your looking at £700 at the absolute minimum for a patent and thats before you pay for attorneys. There is also a renewal fee usually each year.

It isn't cheap and probably not worth it unless you are 100% sure you are going to market the product.

Some car manufacturers don't even bother with patents because other competitors can view the patents and then adjust the ideas marginally so as not to break the patent laws.

you can still do searches at the Patent office to see if anything similar has been done.

UK patents are harder to get than a US one, where you can patent shapes and styles.

In the UK you have to demonstrate some new way of doing something.

you do not need to file through an agent. you can do it yourself but its time consuming and a little costly. you have to do searches etc first to make sure no one has aleady got your ideas.

I heard that if you sent your idea to a local mp then it becomes protected.

Basicly you do this.

YOU: Write down your idea, rembering that companys would find even the slighest idea if they did use your idea ( So include every detail... ) Then put it in the envelop, and duck tap all 4 edges off it so you can tell if someone tampers with it ( opens it ) And then you send it in another evelop to the mp explaining you want him to "copyright" it ( dont no the real word.. )

MP: signs a bit of paper saying blah blah he has now decided this cant be stolen unless YOU give permission for it.. , then he puts this bit of papaer and your idea in an envelop, tapes the 4 edges up again, and then sends it back to you.

I heard this on the radio, Im guessing its not as simple as this, but maybe you can right up some counciler or what ever?

Laughing £700 for a patent is ludicrously cheap.

Unless you're willing to pour your entire life into a product, you won't be getting a patent. They cost, on average, for the whole process, around £20,000. Once it's up and running it will last 20 years, though you can extend it by paying extortionate amounts of money.

2 methods the legal method , ie go through lawyers cost £1200 ,

the post method , ie write down you idea on paper and post it to yourself, the idea is that the post marks can be used as evidence to lay the claim of your ideas originating date.

both in this world are worthless ,

if you get a great idea a big corp WILL come and steal it , and then drag it out in court to bankrupt you , hand Mr Dyson not had a huge pile of cash to fight Hoover (Evil) corp with , he'd have lost not on the principle but on the point that he'd not been able to fund his defence.

just make something a prototype , start up a company and look for venture capitalists, if its a good enough idea , they will move to protect your product at a price of course like a large % share in your company or its life time earning %.
