Right now somebody please enlighten me, why are they salting the roads in October? Last night its was 10 degrees C, tonight it will be 12 degrees.

So after spending 2 hours yesterday cleaning the bike, it now looks likes its been for a fucking run round a field. Full of sodding salt shit Evil or Very Mad

Not fucking happy, its not even below freezing for fucks sake Mad

After a long period of dry weather, the roads get a good coating of rubber/oil/deisel on them which soaks into the tarmac. As soon as it rains, this stuff rises to the surface making the roads very slippery and can render them dangerous to use until it has all washed away. The grit (in theory) soaks up the slippy stuff and helps it wash away more quickly whilst improving grip.

That's my theory on it, I could be very wrong but it sounds good to me.

Probably someone said "go clean up some shit on the road" and it got misheard as "go drop some grit on the road".

Could be a bitumen mastic road surface. You're supposed to grit these for quite some time after laying them because they have fuck-all grip. Not that the people in charge of british roads give a flying fart about this kind of thing usually but it would be nice to think they were.

I heard on the news that roads are being gritted so that the council's can put into practice their 'actions plans' for when it is icey.

Funny thing is that they were pleading for road users to be patient while they do this practicing, seems it didn't work! Poor buggers can't win: we complain if we see them gritting when it's not icey but go made if it was icey and they weren't prepared!

10 degrees last night? My arse. It was about 5-7 degrees here last night and you are even further up North.

The gritters have quite sophisticated computers apparently which tell them the exact time frame they need to get the grit out.

Too early and the grit won't do the job, too late and it won't do the job. I have heard the time frame for correct gritting can be as small as 30 minutes. Smile

You don't need to wash it, just spray with FS365 and rinse off.

Nah, don't rinse.

If you're going to ride through winter give it a good spray with WD40 or FS365 and don't clean it again until spring. The shite sticks to your protective coating and forms a barrier to any more shite getting to your bike.

If you want a shiny bike, either get a winter hack or get the bus.

Bikes are meant for riding, not shining. Thumbs Up
