Planning to go check out a bike next week - just wanted to get the inside track on what to check over and make sure I dont forget something. Havent bought a 2nd hand bike before. Its not a super-expensive bike - an XR.

Things I plan checking:
Engine - fire it up and listen for any odd rattling.
Oil dipstick - check level - give an indication of how well its maintained.
Tyres (tread depth should be ok given they are not road tyres)
Headlight & rear light & indicators
Cracks on frame or pegs.
look for anything bent
Chain/sprocket condition
Condition of front and rear suspension (other than it being too soft - anything in particular to look out for?)

Should I get engine/chassis numbers and have them checked out?
Is it usual to take the bike for a ride? (or do you usually have to leave a hefty deposit?)
What is it about log books that need to be checked, here in the uk?

Anything else?

Off road style bikes are very easy to check over. Sounds like you have it covered but make sure you see it start from cold. Check all the electrics work. Any other problems should be fairly obvious when you test ride it.

The most important bit is the frame number. If possible have a look at another of the same bike to check how the numbers should look.

Add these to your list then….

Lights, do they all work?
Brake pads
Brake discs, check for warping, bikes like this take a lot of shit.
Head bearings, you need the front wheel off the ground, turn full lock, should be smooth no clunking. (result of wheelies)
Also put on front brake and rock it back and forth, see if it knocks.
Wheel bearings
Wheel alignment
When checking the chain and sprocket, check the bolts and adjusters, you don’t want to find out some amateur has threaded things beyond repair for a change. Heli coiling and replacing can be expensive in labour charges.
Check wheel rims for chips and scoring, as it is an off roader it might have had a lot of tyre changes.
Ask for the seat to be removed and have a look in there, see if the battery is ok and not rotten.

If it’s been used off road a lot you need to have a ride of it, I’ve been on a lot of off roaders and the gear box has been abused and oil changes not regular. While riding make sure all the levers feel fine, get the feel of the gear changer and brake pedal, these get damaged after some abuse and can be a pain to replace.
Oh and one last thing, don’t nonce around on the thing, rag the thing through the gears, quick changes, slow changes, stop, find neutral and off again. Once you’ve rang the neck of the bike, get off it and have a look around all the seals, crank case, the lot…..your looking for oil.

That’s all I can think of.

Good luck Cool Thumbs Up

Electrics are common problem areas and can be tricky and expensive to cure.
Does everything work properly?

Have the bike running on tickover with the headlight on.
Gently blip the throttle while holding something in the beam - does the light get brighter with more revs?
If not suspect charging problems covered up by boosting on a charger Wink
