Just spent 3 hours waiting for recovery company after my engine cut out.

Was fine whilst travelling along at around 80 - 90, then came off the slip lane onto smaller roads and started revving funny, would only rev slowly and to about 13k (Redline 14.5k). Was slowly getting worse and eventually it would only get to 9k, got to 9k and the engine just cut out.

When it fired up again, there was a serious tapping noise from the engine.

I had plenty of fuel too.

It's not the head gasket as there was no smoke coming out the exhaust. RAC bloke confirmed it wasn't the head gasket.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be?

Although in a recent post, someones bike was making a horrendous clattering noise and it turned out that one of his sparkplugs had partially unscrewed itself.

Check it is firing on all cylinders first off. If it is, have a look at the sparkplug electrodes, their condition can point you in the direction of a fault.

Why would that make it cut out though?

It might, probably not though. Still worth checking the plug electrodes.

Spark plugs are secure.

I didn't have the tool handy to remove them today, so am doing that tomorrow. It might have snapped the bottom and the tapping is the bottom in the piston.

Current picture of my bikes sorry self:
