What to do in Edinburgh...

Me and the fella are off to Edinburgh for the weekend in a couple of weeks. Niether of us have been before, so I'm after suggestions as to where we can visit, etc. We're staying on Grosvenor St.

Also, what are the eateries like there? Nowt too fancy, a Pizza Express or ASK or something like that - and where are these places in relation to where we're staying? Near? Far? How easy is it to walk to these places (bearing in mind the fella has a dodgy leg!)

Hey hon,

I would have to recommend that you go on the haunted walk through the cave/underground tunnel thingys. Have heard that it is quite scary/a good laugh.

Also take note of the road which is in fact a bridge...not quite sure where abouts in the city it is but most people dont realise they are walking on a bridge.

Since I live in Reading thats the best info I can give you on Edinburgh.....p.s. bring me some shortbread!!!

you have to eat at hard rock cafe in edinburgh coz its good.

theres tonnes to see and do, go to the zoo aswell.

and if u get bored just take a day thru to glasgow

the edinburgh vaults is the scary thing referred to above and is inside the bridge. it is quite interesting so might be worth a visit if your into that. there are other ghostly related tours etc...lookup mercat tours if interested.

the castle obviusly is another touristy spot.

theres only so much you can cram into a weekend but i like to walk around the city...theres plenty to see and do and loads of places for the eating and the drinking although none of their names stick in my head. i did enjoy a nice italian lunch on the royal mile but the name escapes me

I wstayed there for a long weekend last year when we attended a wedding.
Normally I would never choose to go on a 'city break' but I was very impressed. It's nothing like stinking london!
Every single building is beautifully made and there is a generally pleasant atmosphere about the place.
I found that once you've got your bearings and found the main street(think it's Princes street) near the castle you can't get lost.
I'm a lazy fucker but happily walked around the whole place.
We did a tour of the pubs and bars and went to a nice thai restaurant but I'd never remember the name! have a good time.

Grosvenor St eh? Living it large in the Hilton or some such place?

For eateries you have a good indian round the corner called Omar Kayams. A 5 min walk will get you to the start of Princes Street and just before there is Queensferry Street which has a good choice of Italian, Chinese and other restaurants. Further afield is North Bridge which I think Bella is referring to. Got a nice Pizza Express on there.

As for things to do... apart from the castle there are various vaults around the city, the main tourist one is Mary Kings Close which is just off the Royal Mile.

In Leith (5 min taxi ride) you can see the Royal Yacht Britannia at Ocean Terminal.

Edinburgh Dungeons are a bit of a cheesy laugh if you dont mind being exposed to some funny am-dram performances.

Camera Obscura is cool and is just before the castle on the Royal Mile. https://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/

Holyrood House is a royal palace that's on the other end of the Royal Mile from the castle. And next to there is the new Scottish Parliament... see if you can work out how they spent £475million.

10 mins out of the centre of Town is Edinburgh Zoo but that can involve a lot of walking around.

Oh and invite me, Hmmmz, Vmax.dude and camby out for a beer!

There are more pubs per square mile in Edinburgh than anywhere else in Europe. Most of them do food, varying in quality from a microwave cheeseburger to a sit down, 3-course meal.

They've turned most of my favourite pubs into coffee houses or theme bars since I last lived in Edinburgh so I'd struggle to recommend you one. There are still odd 'proper' pubs about though. One of them is the Bow Bar (on the road between the Grassmarket and George IV bridge). A good selection of beers and a 'no parties, stag nights and hordes of students' policy. You come in in a big noisy group, they turn you round and send you straight back out again.

Dinnae worry about walking, most of the town is pretty compact (but steep), there are plenty of black cabs that you can hail.

There is also the tour busses saves alot of walking and shows you pretty much all of the big touristy things, you can jump on and off when you please.

The museum is good, played hide and seek in there for hours when I was younger:lol:

Edinburgh is good but I dont know Iv lived here all my life so just seems kind of boring to me.
