I was sorta getting irritated by all the safety nazis recently, and the daft views expressed by people who either haven't a clue, or just want to raise money by picking on bikers (and to a lesser extent, car drivers), and wondered what the average opinion of the BCF crew was...I am assuming it'll be mostly B's?

Ride as fast as the conditions make safe, ignore speed limits apart from trying to keep your licence.

I think that applies to everyone with sportsbikes, if not why do you have one?

At the moment im sticking to the speed limits / unless its an area i know well. This is due to the fact that ive got 3 points on em license and on december 13th i can have the full 12 points. Cant afford to get any more before then

Even before I looked at the poll results, "Ride as fast as the conditions make safe, ignore speed limits apart from trying to keep your licence." covers the way most people ride.

However this can contain a massive range of speeds which people ride at. The idea of 'as fast as the conditions allow' is going to change massively based on the person involved.

Exactly. Another reason our speeding laws are unfair. Some doddery person in a micra at 50 mph on a duel carriageway is more dangerous than an alert, sensible person riding a bike at 100+ along the same road IMO.

Sorry to be awkward but "Ride as fast as the conditions allow, ignore NATIONAL speed limits, but stick to or ride within 5mph of others, certainly 30's or 40's"

Sensible, but covered by 'as conditions allow' - if there is traffic then you ride with it or a little faster... And some 30's and 40's are daft.

I looked for this too.

30 and 40 are rules to stick to. Everything else is a guideline. Thumbs Up

Stick to 30's and 40s. NSL = No Speed Limit Twisted Evil

I'd vote for:

Ride at a speed within my ability at which I'm comfortable and is appropriate for the traffic, road and weather conditions: in towns and villages I ride at, or below the limit.

but the closest there is number 2

I can see that I'd most likely go with number 2 eventually - and with SoND's suggestion "Stick to 30's and 40s. NSL = No Speed Limit"

...but I've only been riding regularly for less than 2 months, so it's still the "occasional blurt" for me !! Shocked ooh err missus (sorry I couldn't resist) Laughing

Iim still on the keeping to speed limits apart from the occasionaly blurb option - a) I dont know my bike well enough yet, b) I am on a newbie license and can only afford 6 pts in 2 years, c) my recent spill has me a little more nervous than before.

cheers

Depends on the road, the conditions.

Do always try to do 30 in 30s and 40 in 40s though. Thats where kids play and more likely to be a scamera van.

The 4th option suited me best. If i'm in no real rush to go anywhere and I have found a nice twisty road where going over 60MPH would ruin the smoothness of the ride, then I will just stick to the limits.

Give me a rideout with some mates and the devil comes out.

'Ride to within 5-15 mph of the speed limit (dont wanna get banned)'

I find it quite hard to exceed the speed limit by 15mph on my 125 Laughing

Well, there is a 40mph limit road near me that i do speed on every time i go down it, doing about 50 buuuuuuut...

Another road that this joins onto is an NSL and that NSL actually is slightly more built up Shocked Confused

Well, i do 40 the other way down the road because speed scameras can get me going that way, but the other way im riding into them Very Happy

It depends. Mostly within 5-15 mph of the limit as I'm just going somewhere and it's often rush hour.

If I'm out on a hoon, I'll go as fast as is safe and still within my own abilities. In Northeast and Northern Scotland, it isn't difficult to find roads with no cops, traffic or speed cameras on them. Your biggest danger is tractors.

I'd like to add another option: "Ride at whatever speed I happen to feel like doing at the time (but with some consideration of conditions and safety and risk of losing license)".

All of your options about ignoring the law for its own sake seem to imply always travelling fast. I often travel fast (or at least above the speed limit), but that doesn't mean I do this every time I get onto a motorcycle. I get a fair amount of enjoyment from travelling quite slowly as well.
