Probably, like most other riders here, my bike has to stay outside. Problem is that she is sooo cold in the mornings. I am from far more temperate climes and was wondering if there are any trade secrets to keeping them a little warmer or at least not having them start so cold in the mornings?

No,

Even in a garage they get cold. Not quite as cold, normally just a few degrees above.

Best is them garages which are inbuilt in to the house, mate has one, where the boiler is.

You got a cover?

When my bike lived onstreet, the cover did seem to make a difference to how easily it started. We're just talking a cheap rain cover here, no fancy fleece lined duvet kind of thing!

Could always get a heated garage, that's a favourite amongst fair weatherers. Otherwise a cover does for me, it's more important to have it dry than warm.

EXXXTREME but this is about the easiest solution.

Just buy a decent bike cover. Mine has always lived outside, and a cover is all I need. It keeps the damp/dew/frost/rain off, and that helps a whole lot.

Stack straw and twigs under the bike and go out half an hour early and fire it. Bike will be lovely and warm in no time Smile

as long as its dry then it be ok, the cold wont really harm it, well not the temps that you get in this country. The bike will probs be a pig to start if its got damp as condensation got at the electrics and in the engine. Cover it up and that should help a load, if not maybe park it somewere less exposed?

Ever seen an old small capacity aircooled bike with a few towels/rags rapped around the cylinder block? If you can't cover the whole bike, just cover the engine itself.

I got an Oxford Stormex, meant to be one of the best covers. It's nice & tough on the outside with a soft inside that keeps in the heat leaving it nice & cosy for the bike, if you can be bothered to use the chain holes it makes a decent security cover. Not cheap but well worth it.

FFS its a bike! buy it some mittens and a wooly hat. My bikes have had to have snow brushed off them before now so I could get on them to start them. The cold wont hurt them, if you are worried a rag in the filler of the petrol cap and a box of matches should sort the problem permanently....................

...............Or you could wimp out and buy a car. Wink

I also have an oxford stormex, it feels really plush and strong so hopefully should offer a decent amount of protection when it gets (really) cold..

cheers

It really is a good idea to keep the frost off. Especially the seat! Nothing as grim as sitting on a frost covered seat freezing your butt off......

But as has been said above, it's the damp you want to keep out more than the cold. Damp plus cold can end up with things frozen solid.

I have an Oxford cover for my bike.
But it seems such a terrible waste to leave out all night in the rain and get all wet. Laughing

thats actually what they do in Mongolia this guy who did a TV series called

"going to extremes" went to the Ghobi desert at night , it got real cold and they
slept on fired rocks to stay alive , in the morning their cossack had frozen solid
so they had to light a fire under it to defrost the engine oil .
