I've started commuting to school on the bike.

When I'm riding along a 2 lane road (ie a normal road, 30 or 40 zone), is it ok to filter along in the space in the middle of my road. There's enough space to do it.

Not entirely sure what filtering means other than going down to the front of traffic lights.

Thanks,
Matt

Pretty much, but definitely keep an eye out for side roads. People are fond of stopping to let people through the queue onto the other side of the road, and they can easily take you out.

I've found the advice on the Ixion site to be useful in the past...

If you feel like doing it, then go for it.

But a lot of bikers will not do this above very slow speeds due to the perfectly natural fear of being so closely sandwiched in-between moving vehicles.

You can get away with a lot of dodginess filtering wise, but it only takes one accident to see you lying dead at the side of the road. If you do decide to do silly filtering, you've got to be prepared of the consequences (getting hurt, or behind held to blame for an accident).

Beware of the traffic moving out to pass cylists or parked cars, or stopping to turn right. Also beware that there quite often isn't enough space to filter past a car with trucks etc coming the other way. Never put yourself in a situation where you don't have somewhere to escape to. With oncoming wide vehicles this is especially important, they can't really move out of your way.

worst is filtering down stationary traffic, if poss go as wide as poss onto the other side of the road, this is so you got enough time to see the dumb ppl who walk out inbetween the cars & forget bikes still go down the sides Mad & side roads is the other biggy,so while filtering SLOWLY always try to look @ side roads on your left & if there IS a car coming out wait back abit further then the car letting them out is!

i now always rev as im approching a gap in the traffic specially if its were a bus has just dropped ppl off

but as for the REALLY dumb ones,FUCK EM! Twisted Evil obviously to dumb to be using the roads themselves anyways hence why there on foot! Laughing

Watch out for bikers behind you, something that really pisses me off is when there right up you're ass in you're blind spot.

Its situations like this and filtering in general where it is much safer for bikes to have loud cans. When pedestrians walk out and stop in the middle of the road whilst your filtering past stationary traffic just give a little rev of the engine, more effective than the horn. Cool

Bloody hate those pedestrians, they think getting hit by a bike won't hurt, or expect you to move out the way!
