Ok then, asides from backfires and turning off mates bikes as a prank (Twisted Evil) what the fuck do you use your kill switch for. I know its for emergencies, but assuming its rare in a crash for your key to snap off...

I've only used it to turn off crashed bikes to prevent further damage if any of the casing is holed as its very slightly easier to use if the bikes landed left side down.

How about you?

I use it to turn my bike off when I stop,

otherwise if I use the key I have less time to get off the bike before it alarms itself,

also its a crude way of hoping a theif fails to start my bike on the grounds that the kill switch is on,

and I never forget to turn it off, because I do every day.

No idea why its there really, I just use it,

The only time I've ever used it to stop the engine is when I've fallen off and it's lying there revving it's nuts off.

My interpretation of its use.

My son just likes to play with it, I forget and then wonder why the bike wont start Rolling Eyes

Usually for playing immature pranks on people. Laughing

That's about as much that I can think of.

One would have been handy on my T500 when the throttle cable melted against the cylinder head and jammed in the 'big beans' position at 80mph while heading for a sharp corner.

As far as I'm aware, it is for emergencies like the positive throttle lock I described earlier. The trouble is, you tend not to notice your throttle is stuck wide open until you try to close it. This is often at the point where the necessity for slowing down has presented itself, sometimes as a matter of urgency.

Having a big red button marked "STOP" that you can press without taking your hands off the bars is suddenly a refreshingly useful thing.

I can stop my bike with the lights still on with my ignition....never use it like...i just take my keys out and leave the lights off Smile

It would be sods law i'd leave them on for ages and run my battery flat and won't be able to start my bike (don't know how to bump...refer to 'start' button thread Embarassed )

I'm with you on this one.
I just get so concerned about the security of my bike when I'm off it (even when it's locked up inside my garage) that I just hope using the kill switch may be an extra deterrant to the casual chav riding away with my P&J

Useful for braking when your brakes are broken.

Just remember it's not /that/ effective, so best not to turn the engine with the 3k idle on again when you're a few meters away from and heading straight towards a parked van Embarassed .

Sorry, I just spent a couple of minutes trying to work out how using your killswitch could stop a chav stealing your newspaper. Embarassed

its a handy device to remind you that your disc lock is on.

if i put a disclock on, i leave the kill switch in the off position

I thought the killswitch turns the engine off, but leaves the lights on so other vehicles can see the bike better even though it has the engine switched off.

Is there anything actually wrong with using the killswitch to stop the bike? elderly know it all types always give me a shady look and tell me not to use the killswitch to stop my bike as it will break "stuff" (never specifiying which stuff, but continuing to give me that "I am older wiser and better than you" look) Ive thought about it and Ive never really figured out what it could break. any ideas?

I use my killswitch to stop my engine. Means I can keep both hands on the bars whilst I do it, i.e if I'm maneuvreing the bike backwards.

It's more convenient than the ignition switch if you want to stop your engine fairly quickly.

My bike is fairly loud and I park in nice residential places. So I pull up, kill switch, then waddle the bike backwards into its parking space.

Most bikes the parking light only works with the ignition lock, hard to move the bike then.

No they're talking crap. Ask them what will break, then push them, then push them harder, then even harder till you embarrass the sad old gits to stfu.

there a great idea, ive had two bikes tha have been in the road revving, one when i was far away from the bike, and i shouted "hit the red button"

then when i crashed the cat it was revving at about 4k, just walked over, hit the kill switch.

i also use it for shutting the bike off, for back fires and security measures.

Definately for backfires on carbed bikes Laughing I use it to switch off my ninja too, take the key out when I'm off the bike... just a habit.
