Toys R Us: Taking bags off customers, procedures. Rant

Hi,

I went to toys r us today to buy some toys for my nephew. Being a student I had my rucksack on and as I walked in I was asked to hand my bag over at the counter, which I did no problems, guessing it was due to preventing shoplifting.

However halfway round the store I noticed woman walking around with large handbags and large carrier bags etc so I thought fuck this I'm going to see why they only took my bag.
So I go back and ask, and get the usual, ''Its staff procedure etc'' so i said '' WTF what about all those woman carrying large bags, why havent you took their bags off them'' to which he replied with, ''its only ruck sacks we take'' then I said, ''what, incase I steal something, this is bullshit and walked off''

- Now, surely a ruck sack is the hardest thing to steal from as I would have to take it off my back unzip it and put the items in.

- Whereas a woman could easily place items in her open shoulder bag.

- Even if I did put items in my bag theres no proof I wasnt going to take them to the counter.

- Were they just stereotyping me.

Tempted to write a letter to the manager, fucking tossers. Guilty till proven innocent it seems.

I would write and complain
It's a pis* take

Rub it in and say you are a regular customer, as are all of your large family..and you all feel very upset by this intrusion
They may apologise, and may even give you a 'sorry' voucher

You are right, a rucksack is harder to get stuff into quickly, than say... a large open shopping bag

I have never had anything taken off me when I was in Toys r Us, (and I have been there on my bike too with appropriate bags)
So bollo*ks to procedure
Just being funny sods

I wouldn't give them my bag in that circumstance. I am not a thief...and if my bag gets nicked, then what?

Find something to complain about that actually puts mental or physical strain on you, that is undeserved.

I believe its standard practice there and mexico to name but two where you have to surrender all carrier bags/rucksacks etc before you can go browse.

I am 99% you do not have to give them your rucksack ,but if you dont they are well within there right to eject you, also using "reasonable" force. However, it is highly unlikely a shop would administer this but simply call the police.
Shops do have to right to eject you from the premises at any time without reason or justification.

Nonetheless, id still complain

I had the same thins happen to me about 18 months ago in Toys R Us. The 16 year old boy at the customer service counter that you pass on the way in and out called me and the wife back as we passed. We had our baby with us at the time.
He wanted us to leave our shopping bags at the counter. I asked why and did he think I was going to steal stuff.
He gave me the company policy shit and explained that it was for my convineince and safety???
I asked him how convinient it was for me to sort the bags out and tie them up so nothing came out, get issued with a ticket, do my shopping worrying if my stuff is getting nicked then waiting in a que to get my stuff back.
The wife told me off for picking on him.
I have been back since and they have not asked again.

I quite often do my shopping in my backpack. If I pack it as I go round, I can work out exactly how much I can actually carry, without having to stuff packets of salad/ oats in my jacket. I've had people ask for my helmet 'for safekeeping' before, but usually I just say "no thank you" and walk on in.

Holy resurection thread has actually hit close to home!

Normally I wouldnt bother replying although I had to go to Toys R Us in Portsmouth just last week to pick up a pressie for the kiddo from the reserve and collect. So down I travel to get said pressie and ask if there is a toilet.

Dude at the counter said that there was but I would have to leave my bag with him. My reply was "I'm from Northern Ireland and you want me to leave my bag with you?"

The nervous disposition on his face was a classic I will treasure to the end of my days.

Ahhhhhhh... it becomes clear.

Last time I went was straight after work so was on the bike with a rucksack. I walked in, taking my helmet off as I went and the lady on the front desk frowned at me.

"Would you like me to hold your rucksack for you?"

"Er, no thanks."

I sauntered off, slightly confused although seeing as I was carrying a crash helmet I just assumed it was a staff member being helpful. All the way round I got dirty looks from staff and was overtly followed by security.
