Hello everyone!

Just passed my full bike test.. 1 day CBT then 1 and a half days training on a CB500 and then my test. it all felt a bit rushed and i didn't really think i'd had long enough, but i passed so i'm very happy.
was unsure if i would though, there were a couple of times i thought i might not have delt with things very well. but all the examiner had to say was that i was a little too close to parked cars at times and it took me a while to get up to speed. so i thought that was ok.

i was a little unsure what size bike i wanted to go for before my course, but now i know i want something a bit bigger than a 500.

i've seen a nice GSX 750 in a local shop for £1799

i didnt think the jump from 125 to 500 was as odd as i thought it would be, so can't imagine i'd have "much" trouble with a 750.
i'm not in to the speed at all really, but like just crusing round the corners and do want that bit more power for accelerating/overtaking ect..
i've been quoted £175 for 3rd party insurance.
most people i've spoke to said it was a nice bike, but one biker lady at work told me i'd end up killing my self on it and should get something like a z750 instead.. that didnt realy make sense to me, but it did kind of put me off cos i know nothing about bikes.
so would you peeps recommend it for a first bike??

Did she perhaps mistake GSX750 for GSXR750? Recent models of the GSXR750 are very fast bikes, while the GSX I would expect is actually slower than the new model Z750.

Personally, I'd reccomend starting on something like a cheap bandit 600 (similar, but more common and cheaper); though if you're happy to pay that much for a GSX750 and it's an ok deal it should be fine as a first bike.

The main thing is to be sure you can control your right hand - the bike only goes as fast as you tell it to. So take it easy to start with and concentrate on being smooth rather than fast.

Congratulations!

I'd like to give advice - but only recently passed myself, so I don't think my advice would count!!

I went for a Honda CBF600 - it's quick enough for me..... and it does feel quite different to the 500's I learnt on, but that might be because it's mine - and if i crash or drop it I have to deal with it! Confused

What ever you go for - you'll love it!

I wasn't aware they were still making a naked GSX750 like that.
However, I suspect the CBF600 will give you more room to grow than the GSX as far as handling goes.

ok, thanks for the advice. think i'll pop to the other place after work tomorrow and try the CBFs and i think they may have a bandit.
it's going to take me a long while before i feel at all confident on a bike, i've spent a total of about 2min over 40mph so far, and 60 just feels crazy fast. i'm sure i'll get used to it quick enough though. Smile

was driving home last night (in my car) and thought.. what i really wanted all along was a z750. it's the first bike where i really fell in love with the styling as soon as i saw it. although i do like the GSX and CBF's, neither beat z750 looks wise in my eyes. There is a secondhand '04 one in a local bike shop for £2400.
i do realise it might not be "as" suitable as a first bike, but i'm not a speed demon and i do realise my limitations.

and i had my first taste of a 70mph dual carriageway. was quite scary Very Happy

i stuck to the speed limits all the way home and NO filtering. it felt really nice.
