help tracking someone down

guys and gals,

my wife's father lives in the usa and they have lost contact years ago, whats the best way to trace someone, all i have is name and state, also he ran his own business, i dont know if he still does now or not

Hire a private detective based over there. Sounds expensive but presuming he's wanting to be found and is in the system, if they are any good it should only take them a few hours to track him down.
