I remember how everyone I knew hated them and used to go on about how disgusting and nasty they were.

I, myself actually loved them. Mmmm, cake and custard (used to mash the cake into the custard. Lovely!) Also the beans, chips, lasagna were all so nice. Oh yeah, the chili con carne looked like diarrhea, but was quite nice.

I used to pretend "errrr, gross", but in secret I enjoyed every mouthfull Laughing

The only thing I hated was the dinner ladies. They had some attitude and used to just stare at you if you never said "please" or "thank you". Evil or Very Mad

C'mon, admit it, school dinners where actually nice! right? Laughing

Wouldn't really know, haven't eaten anything hot from a school canteen for about 8 years. I didn't like eating chips all the time like the spotty chavs, so whenever I had money for a school dinner I'd get a sandwich and a cake. The banana cake was farking gorgeous, and they did some wicked baguettes. Drooling

Makes me wish I was back there, I can only get Ginsters sandwiches at uni! Sad

I always liked school dinners, because my mum was the head kitchen dinner lady serving it to me - i had to like them! I loved the pizza though, she still makes that for me today! Mr. Green

My mum was a nice dinner lady too for the record Thumbs Up

Ahha, so I was not alone. I rekon most people liked them, but were to proud to admit it.

I just remembered the 'spotted dick' cake they used to serve. Everyone used to giggle when you asked for it. "May I have some spotted dick please". Laughing

Two people you should always stay in with at school are the janitor and the dinner ladies.

My dinners were shi*e
And the din 'ladies' Shocked were bastar*s

We were on either first/second serving
If you were second.. you were fuc*ed

I always ALWAYS recall one day...
It was fish fingers and chips, or curry and rice
NO-ONE wanted curry
hence, I was on second serving...
curry left
I refused the curry, so was told I had to have a big plate of boiled rice

So your parents PAY for THIS!??

I was forced to eat the plain rice with tomato sauce mixed into it. I almost threw up

My mum went MENTAL, and complained.

Dinner ladies at my school were sadistic, power-tripping nazis
And I still remember the fat cun*s standing over me to this day
Egos (and bellies) the size of Jupiter
Wannabe teachers that can't do much except shout and wear a pinny

(My kid has a packed lunch)

How is that weird? If i want to eat chips ill get proper tasting chips from the chippy. School dinner chips sucked.

And the ones at my second primary school were ace. Loved the mashed swede and macaroni cheese.

It were ace.

But at my secondary school Neutral They started doing these salad plates that were alright, but they only made about 3 of them, and about 500 burgers Rolling Eyes

They were poor quality, but then being a child I was a VERY fussy eater.
I'd probably eat them now and find them alright.

EDIT: Ruhbarb crumble and custard!! lush!

I've never had a school dinner in my life as in the Somerset LEA they abolished free school meals before I started school in 1992.

So it was packed lunch for me!

Have you seen the size of the portions you get? 1 hot dog, i eat a whole tin.

There dinners were awful, you got very little & because it's cooked on a large scale with dinner ladies it isn't exactly resturant material.

Prison dinners indeed.

School dinners were delicious!

When I was teaching at my old school earlier this year the best bit about the job were the free school meals. They're still lovely now. Smile

The same dinner ladies work in the kitchen so are preparing similar food. Pasta bakes, lasagne, chilli were always favourites with the option of a jacket potato (which had been slowly baked all morning) with whatever filling you fancied.

I used to enjoy getting to school at around 8am in time for breakfast. We'd sit around a table and check each others homework (so no one had any horrendous errors) whilst filling ourselves with toasted teacakes, cheese on toast, sausage or bacon sarnies and hot chocolate Smile

Indoctrinated Institutional types always say that sort of thing. Laughing

I remember the stench of Butter Beans and Bullet Hard peas.

Only thing I liked was Lemon Meringue or Caramel Cake.
Custard was shite too. But it's the only thing you can pour over Lem.Mer. or Carml. Ck. really Smile

Whatever gives you that impression?

In that case, you were really unlucky. At least the peas could double up as dining room ammunition.

True on the 'Weapons of Messhall Destruction' ammo point.

Did you flick them 'Siege Machine' style off a fork or bat them 'Babe Ruth' style using a knife?

They alway made lots of meat things and hardly anything veggie so by the time I got to the canteen (since I was always last out of class for some odd reason) there were never any veggie meals left...think I lived off a diet of cake and custard most of high school because of it Sad

It seems I may have been lucky to have good memories of school dinners...
I don't remember there being much that I didn't like - but then again I was one of the fattest bloaters in the class Embarassed Laughing

Our janitor was a little bit nuts. He used to love keeping the toilets spotlessly clean. If you messed up the toilet in any way then he would go nuts and grab you by your shirt and tie and hold you up against the wall, whilst shouting his head off.

He even went as far as saying that he installed secret hidden cameras in the boys toilets and would know who to punish if there was a mess. Laughing (We all knew he was bullshitting us of course).

He really took the piss though, the girls toilets had that lovely soft thick toilet paper whereas the boys toilet got super thin, rough recycled toilet paper. Evil or Very Mad Laughing
