Storing my bike.....

Hey all,

got my ybr 125 recently, and unfortunately have to keep it outside. i am extremely worried about getting rust, so i wipe down the bike thoroughly before putting the cover on it.

What i want to know is is this enough? Or do i want to be looking at getting some more covers, maybe dust covers or a huge plastic sheet to put over the existing cover to keep the bike dry if it does rain.

I put a few towels over the seat and dangled it over the side to (hopefully) cover the engine.

I really wanna keep the bike in good condition, so if anyone knows what the hell i should be doin please tell me, and if you keep your bikes outside what do you cover them with? product names would be nice please everyone.

It's worth rinsing the bike off before covering. If you don't have access to an outside tap, you can use something like this to get the salt off :-

so just wiping off the wet areas isnt good enough? gotta rinse the whole bike to get the corrosive salt off?

After rain isn't that bad, but once the gritters come out of hibernation then at least do the engine, forks and wheels. If you use something along the lines of Waxoyl before the winter hits, it'll look better in the spring (after a lot of elbow grease getting it off again)

ok thanks a load dude, so will just the 1 cover be fine to keep it rust free if i rinse the bike when i get home each night?

Ideally, you don't want to put the bike away wet (salty or otherwise). Putting towels over the bike may be keeping moisture around under the waterproof cover, which may lead to more condensation than you would normally have. I haven't personally had to put a bike under a cover, as I have a garage. Someone else might be able to give a better pointer whether to use multiple layers.

You could use that fs365 spray by scottoiler. My bike lives outside and will be getting liberal applications of it this winter.

I kept my Varadero outside all last winter under one of the Honda breathable covers and had no probs with rust or condensation. Not a good idea to use towels as these will take up moisture from the air and then be damp under the cover (opps - I see you've now taken 'em off )

The same cover will be used for my Deauville this winter.
