Hi folks, just wondering how I can stiffen up my rear (and possibly front eventually) suspension on my E1 model ZZR600?

I have had a look at the manual and it says there are adjustments I can make to preload and dam, ping so that will be my first port of call, the problem is from what I have read the ZZR rear shock is pretty piss poor at the best of times. I have seen a zzr1200 rear shock that is pretty much a straight swap but will lose 1" height off the rear and I wanted to raise the height by an inch or two.... decision decisions...

any nice clever ideas from you lot?

cheers

the zzr600's were known for having a soft front end, best thing would be to fit stiffer fork springs.

Using a different weighted oil should stiifen the front end up a little eg engine oil instead.

Or, so I'm led to beileve Eh?

I am already a member of zzr-international and am looking at options there too, although there is a larger knowledgebase here - hence the question.
The problem is mainly with the rear, I have looked at using different oil to stiffen the front and a number of other options but I am still hoping for a cheap/quick way to plant the back end a little more, i took out my mates CBR600F the other day and the difference is incredible.

cheers

Really you're going to need a new shock, the standard Showa unit was of fairly poor quality and by the time the bike had about 16K miles on it the shock was generally shot.
Your best option will be to fit a Hagon shock, that should sort the problem out immediately and permanently. Keep the original shock, if you sell or scrap the bike the Hagon will sell on very easily!
Cost £245.

the back end is really poor, not that I have much to hold it against though - just a short blast round the block on the cbr... I think the hagon upgrade might just be a bit too pricey for a bike thats being used as a winter hack and hopefully replaced in spring (although if I work on it I MAY keep it longer)

The other option is the zzr1200 rear shock with remote adjuster res, apparently though you lose an inch in height and I was hoping to raise the tail by an inch or 2 so its counter-productive, unless the fitting of dogbones keeps the height and remains stable that is..

cheers

That's why I suggested keeping the original to put back on when you sell it, stick the Hagon up on ebay, I'd bet you'd get near £200 back on it provided you keep it in good condition!

Im still leaning more towards the zzr1200 shock and dogbone risers for the tailend, remote adjustable upgrade for about £100 makes more sense to me than buying an expensive model and hoping it will sell later on for a decent price..

cheers

It's your bike and your money, just be sure the ZZR12 shock is better than the one you've got now! Being a 12 they've not been out too long so should be ok i suppose . . .

Hi

Would not expect a ZZR1200 shock 2nd hand to necessarily be better. If you just want to stiffen up the back suspension then play with the preload. If that doesn't work then maybe you can get a someone to fit a stiffer spring.

If you want to stiffen the front then put a spacer in the top of the forks / use slightly more oil / fit stiffer springs. Using thicker oil is just likely to banjax the damping.

All the best

Keith

Keith, the beauty of the zzr12 rear shock is that it has remote adjuster too, so at least I can alter the settings without messing too much. As it is although i have the haynes book on how to dismantle the rear suspension i am not all that confident in how easy it is or how to adjust the preload when I manage it, my bike has 18stone to carry with just me on and I dont think its setup anywhere near that.

cheers
