I went for a group rideout on sunday, but the head rider repeated overtaking at situations like picture.
I don't like the situation group riders queue is devided by cars or trucks but I felt like hearing what you think.
What do you think if you are "A"rider in picture?

when I lead ride-outs, I overtake when I feel it's safe for me to overtake.. once I'm past, I make sure there's plenty of space behind me, and then wait a little till others have also passed the obstruction.

I don't necessarily wait for everyone to have overtaken, but I work on the premise that if you can't see the person following you, in your mirrors, when you come to a turning, then you stop and wait.

This works (usually)

I think it really depends on those people you are riding with and where you are riding.

If I am with people I know are good and confident riders, I would go for that overtake. If the road is unlikely to offer many more overtake opportunities and we were out to enjoy ourselves I would consider pulling over and letting idiot driver disappear leaving a nice clear road for us to all enjoy.

Go for the overtake if you want, other people will follow if they want to or they'll wait until they're happy overtaking.

Ride at whatever pace you want, don't have to stay together as a group as long as the faster people wait up at turnings, roundsabouts, etc. If the slower people know that you'll wait for them up ahead so they're not going to get lost, they're not going to feel pressured into undertaking/overtaking when they're not happy doing so.

I spent a couple of minutes thinking wtf, then realised it must be a foreign road. Embarassed

edit: checked your profile and seen Japan, Confused strange, I always thought that in Japan you drive on the left, just as in the UK.

Waiting for an opportunity where all can overtake at once often uses up a lot of time and reduces the amount of fun.

So yes, if I was "A", I would overtake.

It could be a british motorway aswell, all the traffic is going the same way, look like an undertake.

When I ride with a group, we all establish one fact first - does everyone know the route and destination?
If the answer is yes, then we each ride our own ride and not get too concerned if the group splits up.
If the answer is no, then in a situation like the OP has presented rider A would overtake, but if not followed by the rest of the group when a non-obvious junction or turning came up then he would stop.

So far the best way I have experienced is the second man drop off, it works like this

Lead rider and tail rider both have each others phone numbers and know the route and always stay in that position, and are identified to all the riders in the group (some clubs actually use reflective vests to identify the lead and the tail rider) everyone else stays inside these 2 riders, at junctions etc the lead points to the second rider to pull up hence marking the junction for the following riders that way even if your stuck behind slow traffic for miles there will always be someone waiting to guide you to the next junction, this allows for riders with limited experience not have to play catch up all the time which is not safe and doesn’t encourage them to join in the next ride out, then more experienced riders can ride at a faster pace,

Over take

soon as you feel ok to do so , I see no danger and do this all the time,

Japanese drivers do drive on the left, surely they do , I still remember Siggi's '96 video which showed
Siggi riding on the left, and I don't think he is such a lunatic to drive on the wrong side of the road
that said my old instructor always said,

you can ride on any side of the road you want , the highway code just says keep left he was a lunatic
however and died 8 weeks later when he was hit n run and I saw his mushed up Pan and him all mushed
up being put into the back of an ambulance.

motorway anyway , its not as if you are gonna get lost is it? .

I shouldn't have reversed the picture left and right Embarassed . I've forgotten UK is same as Japan(drive on the left).
(I revised the picture sorry for confusion.)
Ride out on sunday was done with the situation only the headrider knew the route. And Where to stop for rest on a motorway wasn't determined either. I think that was the wrong point.
Thanks a lot for your comments and polls.
Some pics of sunday rideout.
Took a rest at service area on motorway. My W is with Topcase opened.

I would act the same as I would when riding alone.

I don't wait until there's gaps, I just ride, I don't expect to be nannying people and wondering what they're going to do on a rideout.

same rule applies when hill-walking in a group. Go at the speed of the slowest (by putting them up front). It means that if the group stops, everyone rests the same amount and no-one is being pushed outside their limits.

But also, everyone but one person is riding slower than they would normally.

If it’s a ride purely to get from A to B, then I can understand making sure everyone else is in a group.

However if it’s a ride that’s supposed to be pleasurable for the riding, rather than pootling along in a big group, I’d suggest it’s better to do otherwise.

Personally, the way I see group rides for the sake of riding is that everyone goes at their own pace.
Then people either know where the route goes, or those that do, wait or slow down at junctions and turnings to indicate the way.

This way no one rides faster than they need and there’s no pressure to perform manoeuvres that may have been safe for the leading rider, but are no longer safe by the time the fifteenth placed person reaches it.
It makes sense for the faster people to drop back to show the way, as they can then enjoy the ride as they ‘catch up’ with the leading riders.

the basic rule is never do what the rider in front has done/is doing until you think it is safe to do so. group riding aint like lemmings - you're still in control.

the manouvre is not a safe manouvre as it is against the law at that speed - it is undertaking - I do it however, it's hard to say wether I would make that move as you have to be in the situation and rely on your senses which are fed all the relative information.

I often undertake at speeds that others may think is unsafe - it's all down to how much in the zone you are at the time and how you read the traffic conditions.

Just ride to the conditions, within the realms of your skill and experience. It's impossible not to.... without crashing eventually.

Personaly If I was lead rider I would find out what everyones opinion is about such manouvres before expecting everyone to follow suit (I wouldnt expect everyone to follow suit in any event.)

Undertaking in it's self is not illegal in the UK.

However they can try and do you for various other offences, such as dangerous driving if it is done at high speed.

And since when has the safety of a manoeuvre and the legality had a direct correlation? Smile

The best way is fastest riders up front. As long as they wait every now and then and at junctions for the slower riders to catch up than there's no problem - the faster riders aren't getting frustrated and the slower rider knows that they will wait for them.

As for overtaking - each rider is responsible for their own overtake.

I basically understand each rider should check before you do.
But in the situation in pic(sorry I forgot to add the speed(mph) and brake lamp of a car after I reversed the pic), "A" can see the situation better than "B"(Situation that fool driver is causing). Only by waiting for a few seconds, situation will be safer. What I felt is "A"is unnecessarily increasing the risk to following riders.
Space between cars necesarry for undertaking is decreasing in this situation. Lead rider should a little bit care for some safety of group in my opinion. If "B" started to move and find space isn't enough for undertake, he move back again.
This was long straight Motorway and there was enough chance to undertake after a few seconds (just after passing the fool driver on the left lane)
