First bike

When I was on my bike lessons I was initially planning on getting a 125 when I passed, to gain experience (I felt it was fast and nerve racking enough). But then when I had passed and me and my instructor were chatting he said to me that it didn't matter that I'd passed on a 125 and not to be scared by size... so I started looking around and got my heart set on a CBF500 or 600, knowing I could go down and see my instructor and maybe go out with him a few times. Bascially I was confident.

That was months ago. I couldn't afford the gear I needed, never mind the bike or the insurance. Now that confidence I had has all but disappeared.

I still want to go straight on to a bigger bike but I'm worried that I'm being foolish.

however, if it were me, i would spend some money on a few lessons, getting your confidence back, then you can move to a bigger bike. Very Happy

however, if it were me, i would spend some money on a few lessons, getting your confidence back, then you can move to a bigger bike. Very Happy

Hang on mate, unless I haven't understood your post properly, if you've passed your test on a 125cc you can't ride a 500cc until you've ridden for two years (I think it's two years) or until you've done DAS.

If you've done your CBT and can now do your DAS, or indeed if you've just passed DAS on a 500cc, that's a different kettle of fish, as you will be able to go out and buy a 500cc.

Regarding the question of whether you're confident enough to get on a 500cc instead of a 125cc, only you can know that and try for yourself. For what it's worth, I had never ridden a bike before doing my CBT and DAS and I found the 500cc easier to ride and more confidence inspiring. When I passed DAS I bought a ZX6R. I was very nervous when I first rode it about a month after I'd passed my test and with no riding in between. I wobbled my way down my road and around the block for 10 minutes and was still nervous, then taking out on the road thereafter I was fine, although I still knew I had to keep it steady and not go too mad too soon. I'm still learning as I only bought the bike in August but confidence improves every time I ride and I'm glad I bought this bike instead of a smaller one!

As others here will tell you, any bike will only go as fast as you tell it to!

I rode around for years on a 125cc then passed DAS on a 500cc but bought a 400cc, then I moved up to the sv650. Feel much happier about it myself. BUT I know peeps who passed on 125 and moved up to 550, 750cc and were totally fine.

Anyone can re-learn to ride a bike tree....its the roadcraft and life skills that need to be updated.

if you passed your full test on a 125 you got 2 years on a 33hp restriction. so go for the nicest bike you like and restrict it

I think the CBF500 would be a cracking idea. Fantastic little bikes. Got a bit of grunt, can go quickly if you want to. Your confidence would build up in no time at all. Just take things easy and slowly at first Thumbs Up
