Right... Winter

This is my first winter with a bike, and i'm seeing references to products to use...

What do I need to be doing to what parts of my bike, and how often?

I don't want to end up with a rusted heap of shit just because I didn't know to do something every now and again.... so... how do I keep it in it's normal condition in this weather?

basically, rinse it down regularly (cold water, not hot) and make sure you have a good stock of WD40 Smile

I prefer to use FS365. It contains a salt inhibitor that chemically binds with salt and neutralises it. After each ride just give the main dirty areas (and/or corrosion prone parts) a quick spray with a fine mist and leave. You only have to wash the bike once a week using this stuff.

Be carefull using WD40. I suppose it's ok to use on a clean bike, BUT it will not neutralise salt so if any 'gaps' are left in it's coating corrosion will take place.

Best also point out a quick myth regards FS365, yes it's water based and yes it will wash off easily..so most think whats the use in that, a wet day will wash it all off? Well yes some will but then it's a constant application product not a 'fit and forget' substance. However it any of it reacts with salt it forms a compound that is not water soluble and will coat the parts. Only soap will remove it then.

extreme, do you have shares in this FS365 stuff or what? Razz

what bike have you got? best would be to ask other owners on a bike specific forum what to watch out for, because different parts are prone to corrosion on different bikes. For example the pillion peg heel plates on my hornet turned to brown corroded shit straight away, I ended up having to hammerite them. I thought this was pretty weird but apparently its normal on hornets... luckily the rest of the bike is pretty tough though Smile

Extreme, when do you put the FS365 on?

At the moment I'm coming back from a ride, rinsing the bike down with a hose, leaving it for a while to dry then spraying it with FS365.

Is it best to just put FS365 on without rinsing, or do it straight after rinsing?

Might be cheaper to get yourself a winter bike rather than trying to save the appearance of your pretty warm weather bike. I paid £200 quid for a GS550 last winter. 8 months MOT etc, rode it for six months and cost me 2 quid when I dropped it. Its in my garage at the moment but it will pass the MOT and will be used through this winter. Cost £10 to add it to my insurance.

Arrow Sunday + Monday + Tuesday + Wednesday + Thursday + Friday + Saturday, after arriving home spray fine mist of fs365 over salt/dirt. (Time taken: 30 seconds) Leave bike alone and carry on with your evening.

I've not washed her since er I was in the south and that was cus I needed to change me brake pads and couldn't get
me spanner around the caliper bolts as the crap had built up about 30 layers and 20kilos of salt/dirt.
