Once space travel is truly there it's really just first come first served, or who's got the bigger gun to kick the first arrivals out.

For now it's pretty much whoever, since we can't exactly do much in space anyway.

Ownership is a human construct supported by our made up laws. Therefore owning any part of space will be no different to owning land or sea. It will remain yours until (1) someone wants to buy it off you or (2) thinks they have more 'right' to it than you, and will fight you for it.

As far as I'm aware those who have bought a 'star' actually have no legal right to it. The usually 'romantic' gesture is simply a waste of time and money for those who lack creativity (unless you consider giving your money to someone who will give you a piece of posh paper in return is sound economics).

No offense intended to those who have 'bought' a start for a loved one. Razz

America would be the first to make use of other planets, and any other country that dared to try to do it too, would be branded a threat to world peace and be subject to trade sanctions for a few years, then daily aerial bombardment for a few years, followed by invasion and generally trashing the country.

the amount space in space.........is just......well,.....too immense(don't say obviously)for humans,
but it's like you can 'name a star' (for a fee!)but there is no way we are looking at any spacious adventure for at least 10 years or so,,
the earth-originated satelites have took so long to get anywhere, by the time we figure out how to do anything in space, our time will be up(as humans on earth)i reckon, so we should just leave it to conspiracy theorists who believe allsorts(not saying owt opposing/negative) and other life forms out there who plainly have no interest in earth,,if there are any so

Doh!

I like to concept of conquest, bunging a flag on, like Everest ... but obviously this is a bit arrogant with regard to the question of other species on other planets/stars, etc.

You'd probably have to "tentatively conquest" a planet, hop on board for a while and explore the planet a bit before committing yourself to proper conquest, just to ensure you weren't stepping on some "little green" toes.

Man, I feel sorry for any alien motherfuckers out there. You know that when we have the ability to fly to other planets / solar systems / galaxies that we are going to fuck them over. Take all their natural resources and make them our slaves.

That is possible.

I envisage us using robots of very advanced intelligence (using quantum computing - or something else if they find anything more powerful in the future!) to scout out other planets and civilizations. Then we will use soldier robots (also with very advanced artificial intelligence) to try to 'destroy' the other civilization.

If the robots succeed in their campaign, we then send in humans to 'secure' the planet. Then we can take its resources and make it beneficial to us. (Or who knows, maybe humans might not need to even play a part and the whole process can be totally done by robots).

If the robots fail and are destroyed, then no big loss, except for the fact that we would have pissed off some advanced civilization and would be shitting ourselves.

But I see that the robot scouts would be able to give a very good insight (using their advanced AI) to if we would be able to succeed in conquering this new civilization, before an initial attack, so that a human leader would be able to tell if it is feasible or not.
