i was having a drunken conversation earlier with a mate, we were discussing loony things to do on a bike - the subject of him riding his 50cc 'ped to the south of france was funny, but would he be allowed to seeing as he only has a prov license and a cbt?? |

I thought you had to be over 21 or held your license (full) for more than 2 years.
I know you can ride a moped over there from 14, and you dont need license, insurance or registration...........could you do this on a 125? |

As far as the bike is concerned, there's no reason why he couldn't. I don't know about the other makes, but the Vespa 50cc engines are, allegedly, built to last 100,000 km before a rebuild. The good thing is that every mechanic or a even a school kid is going to be able to fix it should something go wrong.
Sure, it's going to be slow, but my best touring holidays have all been slow. Pootling around Lake Como at barely 20mph, bliss! The guys who own one of the scooter shops in London did a London - Nice ride for a charity this summer.
As somebody already said, you need to be 14 to ride a moped in France. Not sure if this is the same for foreigners on foreign bikes, but a quick call to the AA will tell you. |

Fairly certain he would need a full uk licence.
Touring Europe on a 50 shouldn't be too hard, my dad in his younger days (before motorways existed) toured down to Austria from the North-East, 2-up on a 125cc Lambretta.
Took him 2 days to get from Darlington to Dover.

sounds awsome
me and a mate have talked about it, our plan was/is to go find a cheap 50-125 machine as cheapley as possible and just ride em till they pack in... would be fun to try a run from Yorkshire to France, i know one of the bike mags did Prague on a couple of C90's
does anyone know what you would do for insurance.... don't have to go abroad but to buy a cheap hack to kill over a weekend... would wana be legal and all that... just for the grin ____________________ A scientist crossed a skunk with an owl. He's got a bird that smells but doesn't give a hoot |

Riding a little 50cc down to the Med would be a fantastic adventure, and something I think you'd remember for a long time. Sounds cool to me!
A few years ago I hired a great little clutchless geared bike in Thailand for a few days (£3 a day). Was great fun, and at the time I didn't even hold a license at all
I'd never ridden a bike in my life and I just jumped on and off I went... No helmet, shorts, T-shirt and sandals! Although looking back I think I was a bit of a moron and I've still got a scar on my elbow from where I dumped it! But it was a great way to get about and lots of fun. It was this experience that I really secured my desire to get into biking. ____________________ Current Bikes - Kawasaki ZX-6R (636) | BMW G650GS |
