Hello, Im doing my A2 soon and want to know whether a V twin such as an SV or whether a inline 4 clylinder such as the hornet would handle the restricition better?

Cheers, Matt

As far as I know, the engine type doesn't really matter... It's mainly about the BHP of the bike.

The closer to 33bhp the bike is in the first place, the less crippled it will be by the restriction....

As far as I know.

Bandit 600, handles restriction well. I'm pretty sure the SV or a Hornet would too. Smile

i have a restricted hornet and they gave me a certificate to show this, on the certificate it says it can do 97 mph, probably yes becuase i had it doing 90 without a problem, it's got plenty of grunt too, 33 from 90HP sounds bad but it doesn't really make muich difference, the only thing i noticed is when you go to drag race someone with a cbr 600 or the like you can't quite keep up for a few seconds, mid power seems to be lower, but not by much.

if your interested the 0-60 seems quite good too, around 5 seconds and that's with me doing it so if you rag fuck out of it you never know Thumbs Up

ER5s handle the restriction brilliantly.

I might be talking out of turn here as I'm not overly well educated on these things Wink but, I've read that the thing to remember is that restricting the BHP leaves the torque virtually unchanged. Therefore a v-twin (which I guess has more torque) might be better.

Don't throw things if I'm wrong!

Cheers

Ive got a Kawasaki Z750 restricted to 33BHP. and to be honest its great, 2 of my mates have a Bandit and an SV, i can beat both of them on acceleration Laughing , plus its not a particularly common bike around here (i think ive only seen 1 or 2 others) and i love it.

Good luck with your bike of choice! Thumbs Up

Excuse the slight thread hi-jacking, but what's the insurance like on that restricted?

Ive got £520 TPFT with 1 years no claims from my adventures on a 50.

I think it was around £950 fully comp on my bike which i didnt think was too bad. This was with Bennetts by the way.

You thinking of getting one?

That's pretty good. Don't think I could afford one just curious really, like the Z, a mate's just had his Z1000 nicked Sad

I'm not sure whether to go restricted or not, I could do DAS.

As a general rule, singles and v- or parallel twins handle the restriction better due to better torque characteristics in the midrange - the restriction has little effect low in the rev range but as revs climb the restriction becomes more and more effective.
In-line 4 cylinder bikes tend to suffer most from the restriction as they tend to develop their power very high in the rev range, however two valve engines such as the Yamaha Diversion, and some of the less sporty bikes such as the bandit work a lot better than a 600cc IL4 screamer like an R6.
Your best bet is probably a 500cc parallel twin - ER5, GPZ500, CB500 or GS500E.

Ah, i only have the choice of the restricted bike...or its a car so there was only one choice for me!

Good luck anyway, try and blagg a test ride on one, theyre very good bikes, had to ride mine back from reading which is about 110miles, took about 2 and a half hours, only got off once to straighten up. I also use it for college everyday and haven't had any problems with it. Thumbs Up
