My steering wheel was making noise and since it was under extended warranty from toyota, thought would be nice to get it replaced. gave the car in earlier today, and was sitting in pub (yeah tuesday..) having a nice pint ( no bike riding today), and this maggot called me and said i need to fork out 700 for repairs...

Apparently, the steering rack is getting replaced under warranty but the subframe has some bolts frozen/seized and needs replacing... which isn't covered by warranty. If i don't get it done, the car wont b safe to drive.. So the only choice I have is to say yes

Am sure they are making this up but hv no way to prove it.. Spoiled my afternoon , day and week Am so pissed (and it's not 'cos am drunk).

WORST bit is that i don't have any way to prove anything? Am totally screwed and out of pocket.

So basically they want to recoup the money for the parts and labour for the steering rack, so you’re warranty is not worth the paper it’s written on, question one is it a manufactures warranty, or is it under written by a two bit insurance company, themselves!!

What you want to do is look in you’re warranty book (if you have one) and see what’s covered, normally wear and tear items are not, i.e. brakes tyres exhaust etc, however if they have to remove a component to get to the warranty item (in this case steering rack) this is not you’re responsibility, what I would advise you to do is, all the components that you have to pay for, is ask the garage to keep them so that you can get them independently checked/ inspected by the AA, or a qualified engineer,

This will making the service manager sweat profusely, this is a common trick used in the motor industry to recoup there money back, as I said before they might even be giving you the extended warranty of there own back (other words they are underwriting the warranty) so its out of his costs

what year is you're car, is it out of manufactures warranty, 3 years 60k miles,

AA used to do it, so the best thing is to explain what's happened, and if they cannot help they will/should be able to give you the help/tell No's you need

for you to get you're parts checked, this will cost you tho, BUT the idea of this Exercise is to get the garage to believe that you are not gona lay down and take a pounding to the wallet without a fight, and chances are they will say OK pay for parts we will stand the labour or some other gesture to save face, stand and be counted dew


you are well within you're rights to get the parts back, as they are yours, unless they are under warranty see what I'm saying

don't give in dew, you can get the vehicle independently inspected on there premises, I'm sure they won't mind, unless they have something to hide?

I can't say that I know all that much about cars either, but I know from personal experience of Toyota dealers that I'm not exactly surprised by this thread.

I bought a Previa from new some years ago, and within months had to get the radiator replaced under warrantee. (I was told by an independant garage that there was a known design flaw in the 1999/2000 Previas).
Then within 6 months, we had exactly the same problem repeat itself, and the dealership tried to charge us £500+ for a job that in my opinion obviously hadn't been resolved properly the first time.

I'd originally paid over the odds for a car/brand that had a reputation for reliability, but after the number of problems and concerns we had in the four years of ownership I'd NEVER have another Toyota again.
