Tapes jam. Tapes wear. Tape heads get dirty. Tape heads wear. One cannot record or playback a tape on a computer,without a lot of hassle.
Consumerism? Nah mate. It's called advancement. That's why they are called Digital VERSATILE Discs, because they are just that, versatile. Never did buy films on tape, as they are too easily damaged.
