Hit a nasty and now expensive pot hole

last night coming home i ran over a pothole while overtaking a car,
the hole was on a slight bend so i was in a lean when i hit it, the front stepped out followed by the rear Shocked

, stayed upright but i was more worried about he impact on both wheels, it was a solid and deep shock through the bike Sad

the hole was not marked, so i guess the council don't know or care about it.

cleaning the bike today i found a gash in the rear tyre that slightly exposed the cord by a mm, also the soapy water from washing had dropped onto the tyre and a teeny tiny bubble was slowly pulsing from part of the gash.

oh dear methinks pulling the rubber about trying to see if anything was stuck in, i guess it was this pot hole, the front was fine, so i phoned the shop, took it down and promptly had it replaced with a battlax for £130.

i think if the crappy council of hackney can't fill the roads properly then maybe they should have an update for tomtom users made that shows you where all the nastys are like the speed cameras addition.

or maybe a "road(pothole and shit drain cover)angel" that warns you of upcoming evils hidden in the road ahead.

the roads in the city are crap too, theres one badly filled in bit of road just 10 meters from a zebra crossing, nice Rolling Eyes

what can you do eh?
to be honest i would love to spend my £45 used for tax on some tarmac and fill the bastard in myself. Wink

i was told i may be able to claim from the council, anyone had similar troubles?

Did the same a few weeks back and blew a fork seal. It went with such a bang i thought the tyre had exploded.
I thought about trying to claim but for the sake a few quid for the new fork seals it wasn't worth the hassle.

I seem to remember something about the council/highways agency has to have been informed of and given time to repair the hole prior to the incident.

Not sure if this is acurate but if it is i guess you could get someone to report it as dangerous and then go back a week later and if they haven't sorted it say it happened then and try for a claim.

It can be done but to be sure you would need a witness to support your claim.
Back in harrow, a lady in car ran over an open pothole, burst her tyres and successfully claimed from council. My next door neighbur was a witness and hence there was no way out for council. Thumbs Up

Have you reported the pothole in question to the relevant authority? If not, and nobody else has bothered either, you can hardly expect them to repair it.

Somebody here had an accident in the Blackwall Tunnel (iirc) when he encountered a pothole or something similar. It was mentioned that if the council/TfL has been informed of a fault on the road and they haven't repaired it within a certain time, they can be held liable.

This tells you how to report a road and even has a handy online form

You will need to either save the old tyre or take some photos of it as evidence if you intend to claim against the council.

You will also need to take some photos of the hole. Make sure you also get some background buildings/landmarks into some of the shots. They will be needed to locate the photos - A perfectly detailed photo of a nice piece of tarmac can't be pinned to any particular location however good a shot it is - it could be a shot of a nice piece of tarmac from just about any road in Europe!!

I had an instant deflation on my old Vespa due to a pothole a few years ago. Split the tyre in 2 places, about an inch on either side. Anyhoo, I called Corporation of London, they contacted the last person to work in that hole (BT), BT sent a claim form very swiftly and then I developed can'tbearseditis and let it roll. I suspect this happens more often than we think and there is a system in place for compensating for damage. If a council pays £10,000 in compo in 12 months on a road that would cost £100,000 to fix, then they are quids in.

I ALWAYS call the police when I report these fucking things.
Then one of the Dullards at the council.
Last time I reported some 'Bike Traps' on a local round-a-bout they were repaired same day. Laughing

I can't blame the council totaly.
If other drivers got off their arses and reported defects then maybe you would have claim as if you can find proof it's been reported and ignored by the council you can hammer them.

The repairs aren't up to much tho. A bucket full of tar thrown into the hole by one of the council guys.

I've had compensation from the local council.

One phonecall and a copy of the bill.

Pot hole fixed the next week as well.

Mind you that was before the massive lack of road repair funding in the last 18 months. The roads are getting fucking dreadful TBH.

i haven't reported it yet, but today i'm off work and will deal with hackney council today.

i'm not even interested in compo although it would be nice, it's more the road not being as bad that you end up concentrating more on where to be IN the road rather than what's happening ON the road.

just called the council, and they say because it's a red route they don't repair it, it's the TFL's job to deal with that.

Phoned TFL and have reported it, also talked to their legal team about possible compo for the tyre, have to write to them and explain what happened.

I hate paperwork Crying or Very sad

But if it is that easy to report a dodgy bit of road, i may report the rest of my route into work too Wink

last time i reported pot holes to my concil it took them 2 months for them to fix it.

It was an evil bugger luckily the first time i hit it i was doing 5mph so no damage but it was deep and very wide, a huge puddle would develop there so it was hard to see but i know where it was.

But i always make a note and report it if i see them being a danger!
