Hey callum again. I have a helmet but i don't know what make it is, i payed a quick 60 pounds for it. It says " Syko" by the sides and on top. Its very comfortable and I enjoy wearing it, but I was just worried about the price of it. Any thoughts?

Hi Callum,

Did you buy it new? 60 quid is not too bad, some helmets come in at £35-£40. On mt cbt one of the others was boasting that he bought a new helmet for cheap money, I just said that I didn't have a cheap head....

Good fit is very important.

We have the same bike by the way, take care...

60 quids very cheap for a helmet whats it made out of plastic, fibre glass? All boils down to how much you valure your head.

bollox.. they are all made to the same standard to be sold in the UK...

some are built to extra standards, but that doesn't make the cheaper ones less safe. Cheaper ones will, perhaps, not last as long, may not be as quiet, or have other features like QR visors or removable linings..

See my other posts about helmet safety and the 'myth' about if you don't spend hundreds on a lid, you're risking your head.

Why is what I said, 'bollox'? All I asked is what it is made out of. I did not say that one is better than another. What is the probem.

your statement " All boils down to how much you valure[sic] your head" suggests that if you buy a cheap helmet, you value your head less than someone with a more expensive helmet.

This infers that more expensive helmets are better.

I personally think in some ways they are better. They are a more comfotable fit they are made out of a stronger material, better designs and you look cool Smile . I have used both expensive helmets and cheap ones too. I think they are better in the long run as they also last longer.

As I said.. more expensive helmets have more features, can be quieter and perhaps more comfortable.

But can you explain how being 'stronger material' is better?

Yeah! I would say that it depends on what speeds yoo do. Say you race on tracks, I would use a kevlar helmet due to the impact speed you would have if you came off. Also if you were riding a scooter( lower speeds if you did not know) I would use a plastic or fibre glass helmet. As they have a lower compound and would be more suited for that sort of impact. Both would save your head! Common sense really.

common sense improperly applied.

Race helmets rarely suffer large single impacts on hard objects. they do, however, have to withstand high speed abrasion, multiple bouncing and smaller impacts, and ultimately a whack on a tyre-wall, straw bales or similar at a much reduced speed.

on the road, it's more likely that you'll hit something hard, and at speed. A head on impact with a car and a 'ped can have a closing speed of 60mph, with the rider hitting the hard car surface at pretty much that speed. For that, you dont' want a hard, strong helmet.. you want one that's going to deform as much as possible, over as long a time period as possible, to subject the head and brain to lower G-forces. It's correct that a stronger shell can prevent fractures from impacts, but the increased G-Forces caused by stronger shells can cause brain trauma which cannot be recovered from, unlike a fracture.

I suggest you read the article I posted in my other thread, and my post on the MCN board for a bit more explanation.

My £300 shoei is alot louder than my £50 g-mac spare lid. The G-mac has a huge shell and is heavy but the build quality actually seems better!

you find cheaper helmets sometimes use larger shells for a number of reasons.. one, they can use various liners and so reduce manufacturing costs by resizing with the innternam fittings, rather tha making a S,M,L,XL shell.. but also, a larger shell allows for a greater thinckness of polystyrene foam, which is impact absorbing, deforming material that does the important bit in the event of a crash.

the thicker the foam, the slower the decelleration and so lower the G-force affecting the brain

not really.. just like to see the application of fact, reason and common sense. Most people are guided by what the manufacturers say is best, and from scaremongering journalism, and not from what is actually safer for them.

I always wondered why there were a ton of Shoei's marked not for road use in the local shop , which look almost but not quite to the road legal shoei's next to them.

How many serious impacts on the racetrack and with 'peds on the road have you experienced then? After all you were referring to those scenarios to put across your point, and you're saying they are based on your experience.

I'm basing my opinions and decisions on independent testing, my own research, and my own experience of having bounced off an Astra, head on, with a closing speed of about 80mph, and suffered no head injuries at all. (with a £100 HJC helmet)

You are, indeed, entitled to your opinion, but I ask that you ensure if you're passing on an opinion, that the recipient recognises it as such, and not to infer a feeling of fact about it, as I felt was the case with your initial statement.

Isn't this called 'Mine is bigger than yours' and 'My dad has more money than you' etc, etc

Oh man your getting pedantic now. Look, to be quite frank with you I dont care. My origional statement is what I said and I am sticking with it.

Good bye!

Pedantic, perhaps, but I stand by my initial assertion, that stating "All boils down to how much you valure your head." infers that cheap helmets are more dangerous than expensive ones.

This is something I believe to be false, and was providing evidence to back up my assertions.

Ive got a Syko Orbit and its a great lid, ive not had any problems with it so far exept ocassional steaming up. Just because I couldnt aford a £300 arai lid doesnt mean I value my head less, there both built to the same standards, and my helmet also has ACU gold star aproval aswell.

I got an £250 Arai helmet for free last year Very Happy Very Happy worn once by my mum when my dad owned a Harley.

She's pissed with him for selling the bike but her loss was my gain!

Thanks mum!!
