Please turn off your full beams when following a filtering pack!,

Almost every day this week , I've been filtering home and some rookie who is waiting in traffic sees me and latches onto my ass , 8/10 times its an L plater or an SV rookie, which is worse as SVs are twin headlamp bikes.

I don't mind inspiring others to filter or to show them how its done,

I do however mind what they do ie continue to use full beam while filtering behind me , blinding me all the way home, I can see you I know you are there, I can't see behind at all,

I'm getting a tad annoyed I can tell they are on full beam as you can see the little blue lights as they pull up nearby at traffic lights, it is also a no win situation ,

ie I pull in to let them pass , or slow down , they stop filtering , so I filter again and they latch on again.

Please be considerate

A bloke on a Buell followed me on Wednesday , he waited in traffic saw me dipped his beam and followed me all the way home,

on top of this please , use some of your own judgement! , as said the above often follow me move for move , which is not wise or clever as what is perfectly safe for me , can be v dangerous for somebody behind.

I may well attach a huge parabolic mirror to my rear if this continues.

Please don't use full beam headlights when around other people at all, imo; whether they be in cars, riding bikes, walking etc.

Not only is it rude, you'd get annoyed if others did it to you, but it also makes it much harder to see how far away you are.

Although I agree with McGee, my old gixxer headlight was very poorly aligned and used to light the tops of the trees on the side of the road until adjusted correctly but the amount of people who just drive around with their fog lights on really gets on my tits.

I mean why? Why do it? There's a stretch of road with a roundabout in the middle on my way home from work where the street lighting is particularly crap and the amount of times I've been riding home in the dark & had some cock come the other way with full beam/ fog lights on blinding me just takes the piss.... by the time they've gone past I can't even see the roundabout due to the fact that I've been blinded by the lights!!

Fecking dangerous for us other road users it is... a bit of common courtesy please

It seems to be the eccepted practice with car drivers around West London that you have every light on, fog lights, spot lights the lot. Much more annoying!

while on the subject of fog lights etc... this extract from here is pretty funny:

Light relief (prefer hand relief though)
2 motors approaching each other down a long straight piece of unlit road, late one evening, apres pub. I am an innocent passenger in one vehicle, a cock-cheese flavoured Land Rover covered in spots, beacons and aeriels etc.

Other car has slight headlight alignment problems, perhaps a little high.
My driver: "Bastard, I'm not having that" flips on his main beam.
Other driver retaliates.
My driver : "Bastard, have a bit of this then" flips on fog lights.
Other driver retaliates
My driver : "Bastard, OK, how about a taste of these beauties then" flips on roof spots.
Other driver must have some too because more lights come on from his side.
By now my retinas are scorched and little creatures are emerging from their burrows, thinking it's morning.
My driver : "Absolute bastard, last chance." flips on revolving orange beacons and strobes on roof. It's like something out of Close Encounters by now.
Other driver retaliates. Only his beacons are blue.
My driver : "Oh dear" (Or words to that effect)

I said this on another post in the newbie section, I drive 15 miles through unlit country roads to and from work and if a bike or car fails to dip their headlights, I switch my really bright xenons (full beam) back on.

I have front fog lights on my car and have never used them, and the rear fog lights should only be used when visibility is so poor that you struggle to see vehicles about 30 yards in front.

I hate dicks that switch on their fog lights (front or rear) at the first sign of rain or drizzle

Tut.

So instead of just one car hurtling down an unlit country road blinded, there are two of you? Good thinking Batman!

In London there seem to be huge numbers of cars with one headlight either knackered, or adjusted so that it is always on full beam. As a result, you either think the Transit screaming up behind you is just another bike going for an overtake, or you don't think anything because its faulty light has burnt your retinas and you've already come off!

The only reason you may think your lights are poorly aligned is cause you a fat f*ck riding a gixxer, raising the front up a little. Razz

As for riding with full beam in general, it is rude and you shouldn't have a licence at all if you are that inconsiderate.

I quite often follow people who filter at the same-ish speed as me, this could appear to be me copying them but I'm not. I use them as a canary of sort's. If a driver's going to pull out it's likely to be on them, not me. Bit cruel I know, but someone is going to filter or they arent, so...

There are two schools of thought on that - the alternative is the car driver sees the first 'bike and thinks . o O ( Ahh, a 'bike - must be safe now... ) not realising that sometimes 'bikes travel in packs. Confused

The only advice when filtering or overtaking is to be very careful. I was on the way back from Gloucestershire last Sunday with Feef, and as I pulled out to overtake a car and a horsebox, the car also started to pull out without checking her blind-spot.

I was ready for it, tooted the horn, and she pulled back in. Neutral Incidentally I had my headlights on (dipped) and a H-V waistcoat - thus proving she didn't look!

Riding with your headlights on main beam all the time is simply dangerous. Rather than seeing you, other road users are dazzled and cannot judge where you are. They could keep going, or stop, or do something else unexpected. I know of at least one Police force that has been known to bring charges of "driving without due care and attention" against people doing that.

I've only had my bike 2 weeks but I think I need to get the light seen to... The light beam even on dipped seems to be far too high and shines all over the place! I can see my light shining on the road signs on either side of the road. My bike is an imported YBR125 so I think it's not got the correct reflector in it, does anyone know if they're adjustable or do I need a new reflector?

I agree with G.

Don't use full beam unless:

1.) There are no street lights

2.) there is no one else in sight.

Likewise - although I sometimes make an exception on my little Aerox purely because the full beam is still less effective than the LED lamp on my bicycle!

By the way. The 'switching to full beam if the other person won't dip' thing works fine as long as your full beam is REALLY powerful.

My MZ had 180w of conical beam projector lights on the front of it. If someone couldn't be arsed dipping their lights I just switched mine onto full beam, I could see perfectly well as if it was daylight. The other driver usually either dipped, pulled over and stopped or both.

The headlight will be made so it shines slightly towards the curb when on dipped.
so if your bike is from a country where they ride on the opposite side of the road it shines into the eyes of oncoming traffic, or indeed road signs.

No idea how you sort it. Garages will check headlight alignment for free. I assume it can be adjusted cos if you go and drive in europe you dont need new headlights. Smile

Get a new headlight unit. You can buy masks (or fit tape) to stop your headlight dazzling oncoming traffic, but then you lose light.

My local MoT chap is very fussy about headlight aim, and my 'bikes always come back with bit of tape on the headlights... Better than failing though Smile

Hi

Tempted to suggest that fog lights should be connected to a meter. And each MOT they check the number of seconds they have been used for and bill the owner for it. Say 30 mins a year free (easy enough to cover the real foggy days for most people), then 10p a minute after that Wink .

Using headlights on full beam when it could dazzle someone else is about as safe and considerate as swerving at people to stop them overtaking.

All the best

Keith

I hate those who think it's ok to use fullbeam on dual carriageways or motorways. Evil or Very Mad

However, my biggest pet hate are rear foglights.

Why o why do people turn them on in rain or when it's misty?? I can just about put up with the oncoming ''Super Trouper's'' but I hate following someone with their rear foglights on.

This problem was over a year ago :p

It was just the headlight adjustment which was quickly corrected after 5 mins of messing with a screwdriver. Proper dipped headlight pointing slightly towards curb... Having said all that, this was 2 bikes ago Mr. Green

The only problem I have with the ZX's lights is that it seems fashionable to design bikes which only have one light on while dipped... Maybe it's to put less strain on the electrical system? I don't know... But I think it looks crap (I'm a symmetrical kinda guy and it doesn't sit well with my slight level of OCD)
