Ive noticed a lot of people talking about taking there DAS? What is it?

Also i have seen an A2 license mentioned. Is this just the one that restricts you for 2 years or something else?

What other classes of license are there and what do they allow you to ride?

21+ = direct acess = take test on a biggie bike = you pass = get on any sized bike as long as you can insure it ,

<21 restricted test = 33bhp for 2 years

theres also this really stupid test which restricts you to 125s forever .

if you are 21+ DAS is the way to go ,

if you are <21 taking the full test allows you to ride anything restricted to 33bhp , its why 17YO phanny rides an SV (72bhp stock) restricted to 33bhp, and cops get very confused.

Hi Andy,

Have a butchers here https://www.begin-motorcycling.co.uk/

I will take a DAS before next May, but I bought a 125 to gain experience on anyway, I just want to put into practice what they'll teach me on the DAS, in private.

I have read that the test will change in 2008, so I decided to go for it and not miss out before the test gets harder.

Thanks guys that was helpful. So i am 16 at the moment and on a 50 with a provisional. So when i turn 17 i could in theory ride anything once i passed my test as long as i restrict it? What is the insurance like on say a restricted SV compared to a bike that is under 33bhp as standard?

as a general rule restricted or not the insurance companies ignore any restrictors , and charge you the full of the bike

However, 125s are more often crashed and stolen, so insurance may be similar to the bigger bike.

Only real way to tell for you is to get some quotes - even then, if you only get a few, there may be cheaper companies out there for either direction.

But would there be a huge difference between a CBF 250 (20bhp) and the CBF 400 (56ish)?

Just out of interest what is the SV like to insure anyone know what group its in and anyone riding one restricted mind telling me what they pay?

More BHP usually means faster , but in a straight line, experience counts for alot,

but quite often it is a case of man vs machine , the most interesting dramatisation is Chuck yeager in Korea, the Mig 15 was vastly superior to the F86 Sabre until the E model , but American pilots
were better trained , the story goes that Chuck piloted a captured Mig and his buddy piloted the F86 Chuck won both times.

but machine can help out and reduce effort required considerably, it takes quite alot of effort to ignore the twitching NTV as it corners fast , an NC30 I rode earlier this year didn't twitch half as much.

Balls can only do so much , and as said I think I reached my peak on my current bike and can go no faster on it round corners, hence on the prowl for another.

FZR600/1000 might be just the ticket!

G as a racer can probably outride many road only bike riders , as his experience probably out guns everybody's

CBF250 is a biggie single tho = good low down , breathless near 60,

CBF400 the super 4? , accelerates faster , higher top end etc less breathless

Quite tricky to fit if you are unsure as the most common restrictors are in the rubber tubing between the carbs and the engine. But any dealer will charge £200 for the kit, certificate and labour.

Between me and my dad we can do most things on a bike isnt it just washers? How much just for the kit?

Also what do people think of the ER5? Looking at them in the friday ad and bike trader they seem quite cheep and looking at a quote the seem quite cheap to insure. What are they like though? Any one got one?

I am still open to ideas on bikes though. Any other suggestions of a good starter bike?

What did you lot have when you where restricted to 33bhp?

Just pass my DAS on an ER-5 not a bad ride to be fair, but must admit it took some holding on to on my way home @80 in strong wind, but comfy and pull fairly well even from low rev's.

If you buy a FI International 33bhp, they have to be fitted by a shop rather than DIY. But there's no reason why you have you use an FI International kit, can be anything as long as the bike is under 33bhp.

ZX6R then a TL1000R, which weren't quite 33bhp.

Going back to the ER-5, I used to own one and did not really think much of them, not much pull. But as your derestricting it suppose it does not matter. CB500 quite nice bikes, riden a CB500 once nice ride.

About the restrictor, I am all for DIY on bikes, dont get me wrong, but, the shop also gives the bike certification that it is 33bhp or under for insurance purposes and so you can prove it is restricted if (god forbid) anything happens.

I have just removed my restrictor kit from my bandit 600 and my insurance on the first year was 450 fully comp and this year it is 260 fully comp, I am 24 and have 3 years NCB. Hope it helps.

Cheers mate. I looked at a bandit 600 but i think it will be way to much to insure at 17. Think i will steer clear of the er5 now but will deffinatly check out he bandit and look some more into cb's.
