Hi,

I just came across this Dutch invention:
https://www.dieselmotorcycle.co.uk/Images/T-800CDI.4.jpg

    * Diesel standard / Bio-Diesel consumption / PPO (pure plant oil )1L : 40km+ / 2.5-L : 100km
    * Semi and automatic shifting with a 6 speed gearbox / CVT.
    * Turbo Intercooled.
    * 130Nm 50HP range for maximum performance at 1800-2800rpm.
    * Rearwheel shaft drive.
    * DEEP low inpack exhaust system.
    * Personal Digital Assisted (PDA/MDA) Electronic motorcycle management.
    * Integraded expanding crashbar for bikeprotection.
    * Ergonomics on seat hight , footrest and handlebar position. 70 to 120mm
    * Travel-package intergraded in the design.
    * Progressive brakelight and headlight. Power LED.

Seems like an interesting concept to me, but do you think it will catch on? Price is about £12,000 Confused

Here are some more pictures

Offical site:
https://www.dieselmotorcycle.co.uk/

Sorry if it's a repost, I looked about and did a search but couldn't find any reference to it.

Tim

EDIT: Typo on the price (Thankyou Feef)

I'd buy one (with a few changes like a proper air filter) if i was going touring. It would be great to be able to ride to the south of France using £25 of fuel.

Looks heavy.

price is more like £12,000

although it is available as a kit, so that might bring the price down.

Yeah, just they're claiming it's the first comercially available diesel-fuelled two-wheeler. But I don't know if thats true either, I really should stop believing everything written in the press...

afaik, it is the first commercially available.. there have been proof of concept, and prototypes in the past, but I'm not aware of any that have been put into production.

Here is the story

Unveiled in May 2001,

The M1030M1 is claimed to be the world's first diesel-powered motorcycle designed specifically for military use. It is derived from a stock Kawasaki KLR650, and has been developed jointly by Californian firm Hayes Diversified Technologies and Britain's Royal Military College of Science. It is intended for the British and US military and for NATO. The 580cc diesel engine boasts a 50% improvement in fuel consumption over petrol-engined equivalents, lower emissions, and better cross-country utility. It gets 120 miles per gallon, the engine develops 33ft/lb of torque and the bike has a top speed of 85 mph.

The M1030M1 diesel-powered motorcycle put through its paces at a recent demonstration in Chertsey organised by the UK Defence Procurement Agency -- view the video (RealPlayer):

F1 Engineering: "M1030M1 Diesel Combat Motorcycle -- This is no wimpy bike with a converted diesel generator for an engine. This is a high performance enduro bike that will run over 100 mph, revs over 7000 rpm and will climb the proverbial 'brick wall'."

foot notes:

I think it was made avalible to civvies , around 2003 , though its base cost was MUCH higher such that unless you are Sickpup , its not worth the hassle.

Theres a few people build diesel bikes, there is a following over there more than here i think.. not sure they'd be throwing 12k abotut though..

The military only carry petrol (afaik) for the bikes and nothing else so you can imagine the advantages there..

The army are keen to have a diesel motorcycle, as it's the only vehicle that they use that still runs on petrol.. They'd much rather rationalise their fuel supply-train, and be able to just send tankers of diesel out.

Rudolf diesel made diesels to run on anything that can burn , hence you can use bio diesel made from Maize , (he did this cus petrol at the time was seen as kinda expensive and his invention was for the masses)

its why a couple years back HMRE got all defensive about veg oil powered diesel cars, people paid less tax on it,

some people didn't even declare it.

such that Gordon increased the tax levvy on it to exactly the same as the stuff we fight wars over.

such that veg oil cars are environmentally friendlier but cost about the same to run,

boats however are a different story.

yeah if you want your veg oil free ,
but if not go to a whole saler, say Fiddlers where you can buy 20 litres of veg oil for £7, if you buy 5 at the same time you get one free , though the tax levvied on fuel is not a % it is a figure laid down in law these days , to prevent people saying ok I'll add 320% to my fuel base cost if its 0p + 320% tax = 0p.

Top speed was only about 60mph. I remember Top Gear racing one against a Mahindra Jeep (at Santa Pod maybe). Bike was away first, but the top speed of the car was something like 70mph so beat it on the 1/4 mile.

A team of people did the Round Britain route on one, and it returned nearly 200mpg.
