Having trouble getting insurance for first car

Im trying to get insurance for a first car...

Thing is, im 17, just passed test so no noclaims/ experience in their eyes (even tho i been on the roads for over a year and a half grrrr!)

Basically, i want a ford capri
im having trouble getting quotes for the 1.6 laser model.
Im after an old cheap one, only worth about a grand at the most, so something dating to <1987

cheapest quote ive had was £3098 TPO
Its fooking ridiculous!

Got any recomendations?

Sorry, the answer is to get a small cc 'boring' car - and even then you'll still be paying a lot.

You could look at getting someone else to insure it and add you as a named driver, but this can get dodgy.

Infact i hate them. They're clit cars: every cunts got one.

A long time ago I liked the idea of having a 'different' vehicle. Then I realised a lot of 'popular' ones were popular because they were actually good at what they do - one of the factors being value for money.

While my tarty side still likes the idea of being 'different' - my logical side has realised that if I'm not, I can do all sorts of different things with the money saved - in your case, so far we see about £2k.

Ignoring the racing, with that I could learn to paraglide and get a cheap glider - not only is it 'different', but I'd find it a lot more enjoyable than driving round in a vehicle that most will think "old crap" and a few will think "cool" about .

I could only just afford the insurance for a cx 500 when I passed my test just over 5 years ago now I can only just afford the insurance on my zzr 1200

besides, your 17, if you were riding you couldnt have anything greater than 33bhp untill 19 if you passed your test at 17, so its not all doom and gloom


the thing is, the capri is a rather fast sports car with a rather long front end which I believe was prone to being hit as you had to stick it out somewhat at junctions to see
No you my lad fall into the catagory of braindead idiot so there fore you are a hell of a lot more likely to stuff it than someone 31 years old, whos marrid 3 kids and works in a bank.

ok so I dont know you from adam so how can I say this? I can't but insurance companys do.
the only way for you to afford to drive is to get a crappy little run about and start building up the no claims bonus, as soon as you hit 21 your premiums will go down

Hi

It is regarded as a sporty car, so not really a hope in hell that you are going to get a decent insurance quote with effectively zero car no claims.

Put it this way, someone we know managed 2 weeks in their first car after passing their test recently before writing it off. And that was with experience on a moped before learning to drive. Insurance company have made a hell of a loss and know that the same will happen with a lot of people who have just passed their tests.

It's expensive but not that expensive. You should be able to get it down to around £1200-1300.

Most i ever paid for insurance was £1500 on a fiesta turbo. Admitedly i was 18 but still fresh from my test with no ncb. The following year with 1 yr ncb i payed £700 to insure a modified calibra turbo.

There are cheap deals out there if you are prepared to do a lot of ringing around.

At 17 they will charge you close to a grand no matter what you drive because you're a bad risk, it's a sort of default price. Then they'll add to it depending on the car/location ect.

I can get insurance on a 1.6 capri for something like 800 quid, from www.ecarinsurance.co.uk and im 17.

Try getting it insured TPFT. Recently getting quotes for a Thunderace, I found TPO quotes were around £1360, whereas TPFT was about £640. And that was just Bennetts.

Liverpool Victoria used to be brilliant for people with fast cars. You insured the car as standard then you could basically do any modifications you wanted at no extra cost. The only catch was that in the event of a write off you only got paid out for a standard car. But you could insure the mods too at extra cost.

So there were loads of 17/18 year olds buying and insuring a 1.2 nova/corsa/fiesta ect for peanuts then sticking 2L turbo engines in.

Didn't last long though once everyone jumped on the bandwagon. After a couple of years they upped it to over 21's only. And now they are tight arses just like every other insurance co.

If you want something different, get a fiat 500 ! that'll get your quotes down!
