ZZR 600 Not running right

Does anyone know what cylinders 3 & 4 have in common? My 600 D1, isnt running right. It fires up ok and ticks over normal but when I open the throttle (Not riding it) the engine bogs down and cuts out, but you can rev it on the choke fine. I have had it running till it is warm so its not just because it is cold. But also when I feel the down pipes, numbers 1 & 2 are hotter than 3 & 4.

I have checked that all 4 carb lifters are lifting then the throttle is opened.

I havent as yet tried anything like changing spark plugs, cleaning carbs or suspected HT leads as the plugs are sparking when I remove them. It seems to be strange that its on two cylinders and not just one. Have also ruled out the coils because they feed 1 & 3 and 2 & 4.

Any advise is appreciated as always.

Could just be unlucky and the plugs on that side need cleaning or have got very wet.

Worse possible is that there is a crack in the cylinder wall between the two barrels, unlikely but its the only thing I can see in common.

As far as I recall there are two coils, each coil feeding two pots, so 3 and 4 are probably using the same coil. Perhaps start there and see if you're getting a good spark?

first thing I would suggest is just remove the spark plugs, give them a wipe with a cloth, then take some emery (sp?) paper to them, just to make sure the surfaces are alright. You want to just "sand down" the "inside" bits where the spark eminates from.

Also, make sure its sparking right, you can test this some way, but I am not sure how, it involves placing it on part of your bike frame and firing the ignition or something like that. lol.

If its not sparking right, it could be that the two surfaces, which from within the spark eminates, are too far apart, which can be fixed by lightly tapping the spark plug on something hard. Now, I do not condone this because specialists use special measuring equipment and stuff, but my dad did it for me, just tapped it on a piece of wood, and it was sparking properly again.

Would not expect those 2 cylinders to share a coil.

It would share the fuel feed, either a fuel pipe between the carbs for those 2 cylinders or a feed through the carb for cylinder 3 to cylinder 4.

More worrying is that they quite possibly share the seal on the head gasket between those cylinders.

However, have you actually ridden it like this? The ZZR seems to run fairly lean and can bog down when cold. Could this be the issue, and the bike is actually fine when ridden?

As keith says, most likely a fuel fault as those two carbs would have a shared feed, especially given that it runs better if the choke is on. It could be a blown head gasket between the two pots but I would check the fueling first, especially if its the carbs on the sidestand side of the bike.

i got the same prob on the zzr600e i no its the number 1 plug on mine as 234 down pipes r getting very hot and 1 is pritty much cold so iam in the middle off changing the plugs now hopefully that sorts it.

Cylinders 1 & 4 and 2 &3 share a coil, so I would suspect a duff coil. Although I would replace the plugs first and see if this changes anything.

Also check the connections on the coil.

Also on the majority of Kwaks they are either single feed fuel line, or if does have two feeds, its grouped as 1&2 - 3&4. This is certainly true of the ZXR750 and ZX9 from the same year as your ZZR D.

3 and 4 don't share a coil, so if 1 and 2 are working fine it almost certainly rules that out.

I had a bike that would mis-fire on the two right-and cylinders if it rained hard and I left the bike on it's sidestand - the rain would gather in the plug wells and put out the spark. Check foir that.

If the plugs are change and the problem persists then try draining the carbs on that side to make sure they are being filled properly. Your problem is most likely to be carbs or head-gasket as Kickstart said. I'd go for carbs.
