So there I was coming home from work last night when my bike sarted shuddering and running a bit lumpy, it died between gear changes. My bike is a 1998 GSX750F and has just done under 13k, its also restricted to 33bhp and is my first big bike.

The chappy at the local bike dealer said that the carbs were probably icing up a bit now that the temperature has drop some what and suggested that a dose of Silkolene Pro FST (fuel system treatment) should do the trick.

I'm not mechanically minded!

What do you think?, I've not tried it yet, but it sounded plausible and will give it a go tomorrow.

Carb icing is a common problem on some bikes as the temperature drops. It's more common on sports bikes, particularly those with ram air induction. As you have discovered it makes the engine die as you back off the power, for say a gear change.

As your mechanic has advised, a simple fuel additive will usually sort the problem.

you could get carb warmers of another bike,
was you bike warmed up before you started riding or had you just jumped on and started riding and it started doing it,
as winter kicks in, you'll find you'll have to warm you bike up longer, fairly obvious really Very Happy
can't say i have ever used an additive to sort it, but it may be worth a shot.
good luck Thumbs Up

Worked for me, but also try chaging brand / blend of fuel.

Must admit that I just get on and ride, but reading the other posts it seems that the treatment should do the trick. Also forgot to mention that my bike is kept outside 24/7, so I should imagine that carb icing is highly likley.
So 200ml or so per 22litre tank should do the trick. Fingers crossed.

I tried some FST a few weeks ago after the bike was standing for a couple of weeks and was groggy on start up and it didnt really make much difference although fresh petrol was probably the better help.

I always periodically use some fuel treatment in the car but id have to say STP would still be my number 1 choice and it works out a lot cheeper FST was like £8 odds and is 1:1! where STP is like £6 and does up to 60L/300ml which means you could put some in every other fill and would last a bit longer giving better protection than just one dose in a wonder.

The thing that effects carb icing more is moisture content and warm air actually holds more than cold hence why you seam to loose power on some warm summer days but you should let your machine warm up a little all year round using as little choke as you can get away with, I start mine whilst im getting my gear on pity i didnt have tire warmers too Laughing

Pro FST is very well proven as a solution to carb icing. Wynns Dry Fuel also helps and is more easily available (Halfords) but FST is the number one choice of most people.
