9/11 question...

What weapons did the terrorists who took over the planes use? Did they succeed in smuggling guns and knives on board? Someone told me they used tiny blades?

I was a young teen when 9/11 happened, it never interested me!! I have always wondered how 4-5 towel heads armed with stanley knives managed to down a plane though.

Do you really think the terrorists jumped up and announced that they were going to fly the planes into famous buildings and landmarks - knowing that it would prompt last-ditch efforts by the passengers to overpower them?

I suspect everyone on board the 3 planes that hit targets assumed it was your bog-standard common-or-garden hijacking, with a few days terror followed by a SWAT team rescue or a British-style "lets give them all hotel rooms and asylum" ending.

The one plane where the passengers were informed of the hijackers intentions was brought down short of any actual target, presumably by passengers wrestling control from their captors.

Mr James is right. Prior to 9/11, the common thinking was that planes were hijacked in order to meet some sort of demand, a way to take a lot of passengers hostage in order to resolve some issue.

Flight attendants were trained to comply with the hijackers, and common thinking was to remain calm, keep your seats, try not to draw attention to yourself and hope the hijacker's demands would be met before they started killing off hostages one by one.

The box-cutters have at least two inches of blade available, and it doesnt require a very deep cut on the throat to sever the jugular. They came up behind the flight attendants and pilots, so they were able to take them by suprise.

The one flight that went down short of its target was the one where the passengers had found out about the two airplanes crashing into the WTC and decided not to just sit there and let the same thing happen to them.


This is the sort of thing that could only ever happen once. Anyone else who tries the same thing wont be able to pull it off.

Also, when you are not expecting something to happen, you won't act as you think you will.

The passengers would have been shocked that some guys just got up and started shouting whilst waving blades about.

The hijackers may have also have quickly taken someone hostage, holding a blade to their neck. So you have to think, do you charge the guy down and restrain him, possibly causing the hostage to be killed in the process, or do you wait and see if the plane will land and let police / security deal with it.

I doubt anybody thought that they would be flying into a skyscraper.

It's also worth considering that the majority of people on such planes are business types, or the middle class. People like my parents have probably never had to face such violence or threats, and certainly wouldn't know what to do about it but stay calm and see what happens.

September the 11th probably did the airline industry a favour, because there will never be a 'normal' hijacking again.

There might also never be any kind of armed takeover of an aircraft because the passengers are all wise to it.

I was just thinking, do they not have CCTV on planes?!
Surely there must be video of what happened and how.

They even have CCTV on our recently updated from third world trains these days.

Some moron tried to hi-jack a plane from Cape Town a couple of months back, by threatening the plane staff with a syringe. Two South African guys overpowered the a$$hole and that was the end of that! What was he thinking? If he had an AK47 or a grenade or something he may have stood a slight chance at succeeding
