No I don't need a sex therapist! I returned to biking recently after a long spell away (forgot how good it is!!) Bought a £99 Caberg lid, and the wind noise stops me hearing the engine at anything above 30 Is this common to all helmets, or should I consider spending even more money on a better model? ____________________ Currently Moto Guzzi 750 Strada, Moto Guzzi V35 Florida, previously Honda CB125T, RD250LC, RD80MX |

If you don't already wear them, then I really think you should wear ear plugs. I SAID YOU SHOULD WEAR EAR PLUGS
Tinnitus (a constant ringing/buzzing in the ears) is horrible. When I used to commute to/from Portsmouth from Hertfordshire I didn't bother wearing them: I wish I had...
The biggest danger isn't the noise of the 'bike (or the exhaust) but the wind noise. I can't hear the engine on my bike above about 30 either - it can't compete with the wind noise.
Whatever helmet you have, wear ear plugs.

Earplugs all the way I've started wearing them recently and I wish I'd done it from the start. You don't get that 'pressure' feeling in your ears after you've got off and there's no ringing. Also I find with earplugs the wind noise is reduced way more than the engine noise is, so you can actually hear the engine more, if that makes sense.
If you find you need an incentive to wear the earplugs, get a pair of earplug headphones. I recently just bought THESE and they're fantastic! When you have them in you can listen to your music as clear as owt, yet hardly any of the wind noise gets in, but just enough engine noise. I fully recommend them (or any other manufacturers' variants)
Your hearing will really benefit from earplugs. Just a shame I also play drums in a metal band |

Earplugs will save your life with a caberg lid. Moldex ear plugs are ok. There's probably better, but they're good enough. All you will be able to hear is your own voice.
Ear plugs all the way

The caberg is a fantastically well put together lid, i'd say it's probably the most solid feeling of the £100 lids. The only real problem i found was poor airflow over the helmet, causing high noise and occasionally, wind in the eyes. The problem with air flowing into my eyes seems to have gone over time, which makes me thing it's related to the flexible rubber piece under the chin guard. I think this piece has now been trained into shape, and consequently the wind in the eyes problem no longer exists.
It's still noisy as f*ck, though.

This is probably going to sound stupid but dont they interfere with your ability to hear whats going on around you, so making you less aware of any potential hazards. |

No you can still hear a little with earplugs in just cuts out wind and most noise. Saves your eardrums anyway. But just keep looking when riding, best way. |

I picked up my KBC Force RR lid for £110 quid as it fitted best out of all in the shop. Not too noisy and I generally wear earphones when on a long trip anyway. Did get louder after fitting the Fog city insert but I think that was down to the way the visor went back on. It was jamming slightly (even after refitting it to the lid) on the top seal when lifting. then I re-fitted it again and the noise died down and the visor moved freely again.
You buy the lid that fits, then if noisy use plugs.. . Most people I know wear Shoei Raid II's but I can't get any of the range over my head as the fit is just not right.
Wind noise you can ignore, A tight band of plastic squashing your forehead or a lid lifting up at speed you can't.
