This may sound a daft question but anyone know what are the rules regarding motorbike parking?
Obviously i know double yellow lines etc still apply but what happens in pay and display spaces in towns? you cant exactly leave your ticket on your bike. do bikes get let off or what? any help or advice would be great. Thanks

my advice is find a hidden space or do what has been done in newport.

There is a Zig Zag lines for the zebra crossing and a disabled parking spot outside of Bwise and there's a foot gap which i've seen a GPZ500 sat in. Don't pay to park it if you don't have too and if possible hide it, lock it and make sure it'll be ther efor the way home.

i have been thinking about this for when I get my bike. Around where I live there are a few places where people seem to leave thier bikes (free of charge) around the town center. I would imagine that most places have the same sort of things?

Carpark is pay and display at work owned by the council, but all the pavements around the store is owned by Sainsbury's. So I just park it on JS property, council cant touch me.

Also, be on the lookout for P&D tickets that have got the reg on them, they use these in Bridgnorth, they're in use because of people leaving tickets with plenty left on them on the P&D machines.

On all the parking places I use where cars have to pay and display, I don't have to pay. As far I as knew is that bikes don't pay for parking. At least nowhere in Wycombe or Amersham as far as I know.

Rules vary depending on the town/city, and borough, so you need to find out yourself. Don't trust the parking attendant to know them either.

In London, you cannot park anywhere but a bike bay unless you have a resident's parking permit, in which case you can park in a residents' bay. Some councils, however, allow all bikes to park in residents' bays, not just those with permits (as no permits are given).

As for P&D bays, if I were to see you, Drew, taking my ticket and putting it on your bike for however short a time, you would not leave that space alive. Get your own bloody ticket.

If you take a P&D ticket, as you have no choice, you need to write MOTORBIKE on it in capital letters (so no cager can steal it), as well as your licence plate (so Drew can't nick it). If your camera takes good pics, knock yourself out, but make sure it captures the ticket number and date & time. If your camera is as rubbish as mine, save a text message with those details.

And, no, your bike is not a bicycle, despite what it says on the tax disc: you cannot ride it on the pavements, so why do you think you could park it in bicycle bays?

Covering your licence plate doesn't work either, parking attendants now have the right to remove anything covering the plate. In any case, they can see your plate on your tax disc, unless you're not displaying it (in which case, expect them to give you another ticket for that).

I've always wondered about this! I'm going to have to investigate this for my area. I know of a few car parks that have motorcycle bays and i kno that bikers parking in tesco's park in boxe's with white lines through them but aren't for Bikes but no one ever says anything.

I never thought about where to stick the ticket on the bike either Confused

I've wondered this myself a few times. When you're parking near a kerb with no lines there, is it customary to park the bike horizontally, vertically, or at an 80 degree angle to the kerb? If you're parking in a supermarket and there's no dedicated motorcycle parking, then is it ok to use up a whole car space just to park the bike? Is it considered bad manners to park in a car bay next to another bike that's already there?
The highway code doesn't seem to answer any of those questions, and most bikes I see parked don't seem to follow any clear-cut rules that I can spot.

As I waited outside the test centre for the next guy to finish before we all rode back, the traffic warden came up and hassled the instructor as apparently our bikes were not parked "correctly" in the spaces on the road. They had to be "Nose in to the kerb and bike angled at about 30 to 45 degrees"...

As we were sat on the bench and the instructor was having a smoke, the wardens comments got a big "F-off" from him.. Smile.

Then muggins here got the job of shifting the bikes... Sad.

Smile

sounds a bit odd to me. If you've got a centre stand and you're parking nose to the kerb, then gravity is going to end up knocking the bike off its stand. I don't doubt the story, but I know from experience that traffic wardens know feck-all about parking regulations

In pay and display areas, you dont have to pay if you own a bike, you dont round my area.

If you look at the sign where you have to pay, it will say motorbikes are exempt.

In a typical supermaket/town carpark, if I can get away with it I park my bike on the pavement.

There is just no way I would park my bike in a car parking space even if it was free. To much risk of someone opening their car door into the side of the bike. Remember that if they scuff/dent the frame, that's it, the bike's technically written off! Shocked

I always park mine with the rear wheel to the kerb, at an angle. Its easier to set off if on a slope...Ive never been told to park the other way round....

I don't think that there is a national policy. In my local area, if you are in a Controled Parking Zone, you can park a bike for free, if you park it more or less pependicular to the kerb, that is what I was told by one of the zone boys anyway.

I alsoe phoned up the parking office, to ask about where I could park my bike. There is place marked only for bicycle use, where motorbikes are regulalry parked, and I was assured that was fine.

Altough, on the whole, over the years I've always just "tucked it out of the way" someplace or over. I've yet to have a ticket.

There are some motorcycle bays in Bedford, but none of them are on the roadside, they all require some sort of illegal maneuver to use practically.

It may be worth having a look at your local Council website. I just had a quick look on the Manchester site and there is a page detailing policy: Manchester Parking

I emailed my local council to find out their stance on bike parkings. Turns out all their P&D carparks are FREE for bikes.

Also means that i have the record of the email if i ever need to contest it.

Sounds like a plan...

I leave mine in a bicycle bay every day. I also ride briefly on the pavement to get to it lol. Never had a problem, even when riding straight past a traffic warden on the pavement. In fact there are 3 motorbikes that park in that particular bay every day, and most of the other bays around town have at least one motorbike in them.

Like you say though, depends borough to borough.

Best advice I can give is ask yer local traffic wardens... s'wot me n' daz both did. Just collared `em in the street and asked where he recommend we parked as unsure...

his exact words were: "we don't give a toss about bikes... haven't ticketed one in over 15 years... stick it wherever u like as long as it isn't posing a risk to pedestrians".

Got more or less same answer from 2 separate wardens... good enough for me!

It's a difficult to know what you can get away with though. Manchester council specifically state that Cycle racks are for bicycles only, yet when I take the train to work I have to wander through the centre of the city and I see numerous bikes that are parked in bicycle racks. They are there all year round so I guess they've never had a problem with where they park as obviously they wouldn't still be there. But I'm sure if someone decides they don't like the practice they could clamp down on this activity and you wouldn't have any defence as technically you're parking illegally.

Luckily where I work there is private parking avaiable so I don't have to worry about such things.
